Sonic 3 Director Jeff Fowler Teases Sonic 4 & Possible Jim Carrey Return

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 director Jeff Fowler details those end-credit scenes, if Jim Carrey could return in the future, and including a darker storyline.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is finally coming home on digital release, so fans can watch it over and over again in the comfort of their new home. This franchise just gets better and better – and with a Sonic the Hedgehog 4 already confirmed, the fanbase is over the moon.

In this interview with Sonic Director Jeff Fowler, he reveals how thankful he is to the fans for embracing the dark Shadow and Maria storyline – despite the few tweaks they made to it. Fowler also teases what is to come in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and if we might see Jim Carrey back in one way or another.

He also addresses the fan theory that the color of the clothes Tika Sumpter wears in the films tease the new characters that appear in the end-credit scenes.

Jeff Fowler Is Thankful Fans Embraced Shadow & Maria’s Darker Storyline

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Review: The Best of the Trilogy?
Shadow (Keanu Reeves) in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

Tessa Smith: Do you have a certain Easter egg or moment that you were most excited to include in Sonic 3?

Jeff Fowler: I really love the Shadow and Maria stuff. I think that was everyone’s biggest question coming into this third film was how are we going to handle it? And like, were we going to really soften it? Like, were we going to kind of rewrite it? Because it’s a different tone. It’s a heavier subject matter than we’ve done in any of these films. So it’s something we worked really hard on it. For me, from my standpoint, that’s the thing I’m extremely excited about, is that that was so well received. And even though we made a few tweaks to the canon, that fans understood and supported it, and really just seeing all the fan art online, and just people have really just fallen in love with this movie version of Shadow and Maria, which is just awesome

Tessa Smith: This could potentially be Jim Carrey’s last Sonic film, but is there a chance that he could pop up in Sonic 4 or beyond?

Jeff Fowler:  I mean, I love working with Jim Carrey. It’s too soon to really say where things could go from here. But I mean, I’m just so proud of these three films. And I know he’s just as having the time of his life, and has had the time of his life playing Robotnik. So yeah, it’s something we just have to kind of get into. But too soon to say anything just yet.

Tike Sumpter’s Clothing May (Or May Not) Tease New Characters

James Marsden as Tom and Tika Sumpter as Maddie in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

Tessa Smith: Fans seem to think that Tika Sumpter’s clothes hint at new characters coming in to the franchise.

Jeff Fowler:  I will leave that continuing to fan speculation. I would love to be that clever to be things planned out that far ahead. But no, it’s a real testament to how deep into the weeds the fans go. And really, they’re just, they’re very smart. They’ve got really fun opinions. They don’t miss a thing. Every pixel gets scrutinized in these films and it’s awesome. You love to see that level of engagement.

Will We Ever See Silver The Hedghog In A Sonic Movie?

Sonic (Ben Schwartz) in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

Tessa Smith: My oldest daughter’s favorite character is Silver. She wanted me to let you know she needs to see Silver in the future.

Jeff Fowler: There’s a lot of silver fans out there. She’s not alone. We’ll take it into consideration for sure.
