Companion Review: An Exploration Of Abusive Relationships

Companion is a twisted, dark comedy that boasts incredible performances from the cast and explores abusive relationships like never seen before.

Companion Movie review

Horror is one of my favorite genres, but I especially love when it crosses the line to be more of a dark comedy, which is exactly what Companion is. This movie has several laugh-out-loud moments, but it also is not afraid to get dark. Sophie Thatcher is phenomenal as Iris, but it is Jack Quaid who will surprise audiences – because trust me, you have never seen him like this.

Does The Trailer Show Too Much?

Yes.. and No.

If you have not yet seen the trailer for Companion, skip it. As soon as I finished watching it, I had a feeling it showed too much, and it does. That said, there are still plenty of surprises in store for viewers. Some are predictable, some aren’t.

That said, I really wish I had gone into this movie blind. Honestly, I would not even read reviews before checking it out – so bookmark this and come back later. There are so many elements packed into this movie, that it is more fun to see them play out on screen when you have no idea what is coming. Even though they hint at most of the twists ahead of time.

An Interesting Exploration Of Abusive Relationships

Companion offers an exploration of abusive relationships that could be triggering for some viewers. The themes of a partner that will control you to the point where you know it is wrong, but then cannot bring yourself to do anything to get yourself out of the situation are heavy throughout the film. This is one of the main reasons Companion works, however.

There are some people who are certainly going to be able to relate, and in all honesty, it is this messaging that will have viewers hating some characters. Whenever things get too dark, though, humor is thrown into the mix to make it more digestible. This was my favorite aspect of Companion – it really is a perfect blend of many different genres that will have you feeling all sorts of feelings.

Companion Boasts Phenomenal Performances All Around

The cast of Companion is rather small, but everyone has their moment to shine. You will love characters, you will hate characters, and you will often be wrong in who you decide to root for. Sophie Thatcher has a commanding presence throughout the entire film. She absolutely devours the lead role, and was the perfect choice for this characters.

Get ready to see Jack Quaid like you have never seen him before. I do not want to go into it too much, for fear of spoilers, but he is brilliant as Josh. BRILLIANT. Then we have Harvey Guillen. To no one’s surprise, he is fantastic in this movie. He brings the fun and humor, and I could not help but adore him.

Lukas Gage is also great as Patrick. He is another perfect casting choice. This is another role that is hard to talk about without spoilers but there is one moment in particular that hearts everywhere are going to bleed for him. He is amazing.

Overall, Companion Is A Lot Of Fun

Companion is one wild ride. If you go into it completely blind you will be absolutely shook at every twist and turn. Even if you know the premise, and have seen the trailer, this movie has things in store for you that will never see coming (and some things that you will see coming, but that doesn’t make them any less exciting).

Unafraid to go there when it comes to the themes of abusive relationships, some scenes could certainly be triggering, but they are the ones that will stick with you for a long time after the credits roll. Companion is a dark comedy that begs to be seen on the biggest screen possible, so grab your tickets for when it hits theaters on January 31st.
