Babes is a touching buddy comedy that is able to deliver true emotional moments, while simultaneously making the audience crack up.
Pregnancy is not easy. And it isn’t as beautiful as it is cracked up to be either. Sure, it is a pretty incredible feat to grow another human body inside of yours, but the experience is not all sunshine and rainbows. Babes is completely unafraid to tackle the reality of what birthing a child entails, not only physically, but mentally as well.
In Babes, Eden (Ilana Glazer) has a one night stand and finds herself unexpectedly with child. Her best friend, Dawn (Michelle Buteau), has just had her second baby and so she goes to her for advice. Eden decides to keep the baby, and what follows is her hilarious, raw, and sometimes raunchy, experience with pregnancy.
As a mother myself, this film really resonated with me. I felt a connection to the Dawn character in particular as I have two children and I remember exactly how it was after my second daughter was born.
There is a scene where Dawn is describing how she forgot how hard babies are, and how she tricked herself into thinking having a second child would be easier, but it wasn’t. This, plus the conversation she has with her husband (Hasan Minhaj) afterwards, really hit me in the feels because I can whole heartedly relate.
Life as a parent is exhausting. It is rewarding and there is nothing quite like the love you have for your child, but it is tiring.
Some of the best moments in Babes is when Eden is talking about something she is going through and Dawn chuckles to herself, saying that she remembers what that was like. These are some of the most relatable things in the film, but it isn’t all seriousness and emotional bonding, either.
This movie is completely unafraid to dive into the gross side of pregnancy. The real side of it. Babes relishes in the ridiculousness of growing another human inside of you. Hormones flood your body and you say and do things that you never thought you would. You cannot control your emotions, or your bodily functions, and it is hard. Really, truly, hard.
Babes is the perfect film to see with a group of your best girlfriends. It is absolutley hilarious. Some jokes miss but there are enough that hit so perfectly, you will forget the missteps. This is a movie that was made for women, so we can laugh at ourselves and what we have to go through to have children, but also so that we can appreciate the strong female friendships in our lives.
There are several key scenes in this movie that might even have you shedding a few tears. Babes knows how to perfectly blend humor, reality, and heart. Weaved throughout the ridiculous stuff, is the raw and realness, as well as emotional beats.
Grab your besties and head to the theater for a girls day to see Babes, you won’t regret it.
