In this interview with The Family Plan cast and director, they reveal their secret skills that they think fans would be surprised to learn about.
Dan Morgan (Mark Wahlberg) lives a quiet suburban life as a devoted husband, father of three, and successful car salesman. His wife (Michelle Monaghan) sometimes wishes he would be more spontaneous. When she finally gets what she asks for, she has no idea the motivation behind it. Years ago, Dan was an elite government assassin tasked with eliminating the world’s deadliest threats.
When his enemies track him down, he packs his unsuspecting wife, angsty teen daughter, pro-gamer teen son, and adorable ten-month-old baby into their minivan and takes off on an impromptu cross-country road trip to Las Vegas. Determined to protect his family, Dan must put his long-dormant skills into action without revealing his true identity.
We caught up with the cast of The Family Plan – Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Monaghan, Zoe Colletti, and Van Crosby – as well as the director Simon Cellan Jones, to talk all about the new film. The Family Plan cast and director reveal their secret skills that they think fans would be surprised to learn they can do. They also detail the stunt work that went into the action sequences and if there could possibly be a sequel.
The Family Plan Cast Reveals Their Secret Skills
Mama’s Geeky: In The Family Plan it seems that every member of the family has a secret skill they are hiding. What secret skill do you have?
Simon Cellan Jones: Like most parents, I hope my secret skill is wrangling infuriating children who are always hard to manage and deal. They’re always on their screens. They’re always doing what you don’t want. But you know, as a parent, you’ve got to let them do a little bit what they want.
Mark Wahlberg: I can fall asleep really early. That’s something I put right now at the top of my resume.
Michelle Monaghan: I’m a good baker. I’ve said this a lot, but I’m a decent baker. I think that’s a nice skill. But I don’t really have any other secret skills beyond that. I’m very good at parallel parking actually. Randomly. I can get it in one go. I’m pretty proud of that.
Zoe Colletti: I pride myself in doing a pretty good Pikachu impression. That would be my party trick.
Van Crosby: My God. I’m realizing I have no skill.
Van then proceeds to cup his hands together and blow through them making the sound of a horn. Pretty impressive if you ask me.
Mama’s Geeky: Was there an action sequence in particular that was difficult to pull off?
Simon Cellan Jones: They all worked out in the end, but I’m gonna level with you. We had a big big fight in a supermarket. Which, so far so normal, but there’s one kicker to it – there’s a baby strapped into a Baby Bjorn. We had two twins playing the baby Max, who were both fantastic. But this was their first big heavy day. And of course, one of them strapped to Mark Wahlberg, and he’s lovely with kids. So he looks after them very well, but he’s fighting and he’s moving around. He’s doing all that stuff. And the babies will go wait a minute, wait a bit. This is not in our contract. So we had to be very, very patient that day. It worked out but there were a couple of times when I was going, Oh my God, my career is over.
Mama’s Geeky: The way this movie ends, it seems like it would be really fun to have a sequel. Is that something you would do?
Simon Cellan Jones: I couldn’t possibly comment. But you know, let’s see what happens. It’s very rare that I’ve had that much fun making a film. So I might be up for having more fun. I don’t know if I’d say no.
The Family Plan premieres on Apple TV+ on December 15.

About The Family Plan
Dan Morgan (Mark Wahlberg) loves his quiet suburban life as a devoted husband, father of three and successful car salesman. But that’s only half the story. Decades earlier, he was an elite government assassin tasked with eliminating the world’s deadliest threats.
When enemies from his past track him down, Dan packs his unsuspecting wife (Michelle Monaghan), angsty teen daughter, pro-gamer teen son and adorable 10-month-old baby into their minivan and takes off on an impromptu cross-country road trip to Las Vegas. Determined to protect his family — while treating them to the vacation of a lifetime — Dan must put his long-dormant skills into action, without revealing his true identity.
Family road-trips can be difficult, even without assassins chasing you.
