Finn Lee-Epp Talks Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie

Mama’s Geeky: What was your reaction to getting the role of Ryder in PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie?

Finn Lee-Epp: Yeah, it was crazy. So I was doing auditions and the audition came along that was for Ryder in the movie. So I did my first audition. It was just a couple of things about myself. So I submitted that and then I got another audition back. That was a couple scenes. So I read that. Then a little while later, I got my third audition, which was in studio. So that was really neat. I got to meet the director, the writer, all those people. And it was a couple more scenes. I read that and I went home not thinking much of it. I was at school a couple of weeks later, and my dad texted me. He said, Come outside right now. So I came outside, I was a bit worried, and I got in the car. Once I was in the car, both my parents were there and my mom turned to me and she said hello, Ryder. And it was so crazy. Instantly I realized I was Ryder.

Mama’s Geeky: Had you watched Paw Patrol before getting the audition?

Finn Lee-Epp: Yes. My brother was the perfect age for watching Paw Patrol when it first came out, so I would always watch it with him. I never thought that I would end up playing Ryder in the movie. So everything has come full circle. When I first got the part, I had to go back and watch the show, and watch the first movie. It was crazy.

Mama’s Geeky: In this movie you don’t just get to be Ryder, you get to be a superhero too. What was that like?

Finn Lee-Epp: It was really neat. I was so surprised by all these new things they’re bringing to the movie. It’s completely different from the first movie, which is really cool. It’s a nice blend of genres, like it appeals to adults too. As a teenager, I actually really enjoyed watching the movie because it’s exciting.

Mama’s Geeky: What was it like when you first saw the design of Ryder?

Finn Lee-Epp: I didn’t get to see the designs up until my last voice recording because they hadn’t done any of the animation up until that point. So I was kind of imagining everything in my head. And it was really, it was weird. It was crazy when I saw this, like bare bones animation. It was neat seeing all these things come together over this course of like, six, seven months.

Mama’s Geeky: What do you hope that kids take away from this film?

Finn Lee-Epp: I really think “No job is too big. No pup is too small.” is really important. This movie really focuses on Skye, who’s the smallest pup on the team. She’s been feeling down because she’s the smallest. But it really shows that you can do anything, no matter where you’re from, your size, no matter who you are.

Mama’s Geeky: Is there a pup that you feel you relate to the most?

Finn Lee-Epp: I really like Skye because I have a cockapoo at home.
