I Am Groot is a hoot and a holler. These shorts go on a series of hilarious mini-adventures with everyone’s favorite Flora Colossus.
I Am Groot is an adorable collection of shorts that follows baby Groot to toddler Groot as he navigates through life when the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy aren’t around (at least for the most part — keep your eyes peeled for some fun cameos!). Five shorts were released on Disney+ today, each of which are about four minutes long. That might not seem like enough time for Groot to get in to some mischief, but trust us, it is!
Over the course of twenty minutes or so Groot finds himself going toe-to-toe with another tree creature, invested in fashion design, creating a masterpiece for his family (the Guardians, of course!), bothering a tiny alien species, and exploring strange noises on the Milano in the middle of the night. Each of these shorts is a whole ton of fun — and best of all they tell a cute, cohesive story in just a few minutes.
When it comes to short adventures like this, it is easy for them to feel lost and like they aren’t truly part of the universe. However, I Am Groot does a wonderful job of fitting in with everything we know about this version of Groot, and the Guardians of the Galaxy as well. Not only is he sassy and inquisitive, he is very much a young Flora Colossus just trying to stay entertained while his friends are off doing who knows what.
Seeing this side of Groot, and knowing all the crazy antics he can get up to, is a complete joy to watch play out. Fans of the films will recall that scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 where Baby Groot is told NOT to press a red button and it takes him far too long to get the concept. This is the Groot that is seen in these shorts, which helps them to fit right into the universe without even a question.
The most impressive part of I Am Groot, however, is the animation. It is absolutely gorgeous. Since the shorts are just that, short, they are more than worth watching time and time again — if only to check out the detailed backgrounds in each of them. Even just looking at Groot and the way his body moves as he moves is impressive. The animators who helped bring I Am Groot to life should be applauded ten times over. There is something truly special about it.
Of course, it is great to hear Vin Diesel back as the voice of Groot, too. There isn’t much dialogue in these shorts at all — pretty much just “I Am Groot” except for a certain someone coming in during one of the episodes. This isn’t a bad thing though, and very much feels true to what these are all about — Groot!
I Am Groot is something that viewers of all ages will enjoy. They are quick, to the point, and absolutely hilarious. With each one delivering a fun mini-adventure, the episodes give fans a Guardians of the Galaxy fix as they wait for the holiday special to release later this year.
The rewatchability, visually stunning animation, and silliness make them an absolute must watch! Audiences everywhere will be shouting “I Am Groot” (AKA more please!) after tuning in.
