Head Writer Explains Why Marvel Brings Zombies Into What If…?

Marvel Zombies are confirmed to appear in Marvel Studios’ What If, however they are their own series in the comics. So why did they go this route?

Marvel Studios’ What If…? explores the questions many fans have on their minds — What If Captain Carter took the super soldier serum, What If Doctor Strange lost his heart and not his hands, and many more. This is a popular comic book series and so is Marvel Zombies — but they are not one in the same.

During a press day with the creators, I just had to ask why bring in Marvel Zombies? The answer is a simple one. Head Writer A.C. Bradley answers “the zombies.” She does go on to explain that she brought it up to Kevin Feige as a pie in the sky throw away — never expecting it would ever happen.

“Brad [Winderbaum] was excited and Kevin kind of surprised us by being like, ‘Yeah, no, you’re doing Marvel Zombies.’”

Bradley says that the fun part of Marvel Zombies for her was to dive into the initial run from the comics. Probably more than any other of their episodes, they drew mostly from the comics for the inspiration for actual pieces and scenes because it is just so good. Of course, the other What If storylines have to be tied more to the Marvel Cinematic Universe than the comics because, well, they are confirmed to be MCU canon after all.

The series is directed by Bryan Andrews; AC Bradley is head writer.

Marvel’s What If…? comes to Disney+ on August 11th.
