Doom Patrol Season 3 Review: The Most Absurd Season Yet

Doom Patrol season 3 promises to be the most absurd and bizarre season yet with an incredibly disturbing first five episodes.

doom patrol season two episode nine

Fans probably remember how abruptly the second season of Doom Patrol ended. It was slated for ten episodes but only nine were made because of, you know, 2020. They tried their best to tie things up, at least a little, but the first episode of season three finally allows for some closure. The start to this season feels like it would have fit snuggly at the end of the previous season, but it is what it is.

Episode 3×1 allows for those cliffhangers to be dealt with, a big bad to be dealt with (at least a little), and to also set up for the rest of the season. While it would have worked better at the end of season two, at least we have it now.

It should be said that this review is based solely on the first five episodes of the season, but they are any indication as to what is in store for fans, the absurd meter is going to be off the charts — in the best way possible.

One of the best things about Doom Patrol is how bizarre and off the wall it is. This show features a group of strangers who all gained their powers and abilities because of horrific accidents — but they are left, at least partly, disfigured. They live together and are quite the group of “superheroes”. Now, if you think that seasons one and two featured some crazy story telling and peculiar incidents, just wait until you watch season three.

Any show with an ensemble cast this large can find it hard to give them each their time to shine. Doom Patrol has had this issue in the past, especially in season one, however it seems to fix it in season 3. It isn’t perfect by any means, but each character feels like they are given enough time on screen to get some good character development. It probably helps that fans have gotten to know them all over the last 19 episodes, and can follow them on their journey easier, without much more backstory.

Characters like Cliff, Rita, and Larry absolutely shine in the first part of Doom Patrol season 3. Last season they had their time but it was nothing like they have now. While Crazy Jane also has her moments, fans are going to be asking for more of her. Dorothy on the other hand, doesn’t get much time after the premiere episode, which is a bummer. However when she is on screen, she is fantastic.

That being said, this season also brings in a few new characters and while they are quite amazing, they do require more set up than usual. DC shows tend to have large casts, and along with that the hope to have episodes focus solely on one or two of them. Screen time can wear thin, but this is something that Doom Patrol handles well in Season 3. It certainly helps that each and every episode is crazier and more bizarre than the last one.

As each episode ends, fans will be ready to click onto the next — yes, it is THAT good this season.

About Doom Patrol Season 3

DOOM PATROL reimagines one of DC’s most beloved groups of superheroes:

  • Robotman aka Cliff Steele (Brendan Fraser)
  • Negative Man aka Larry Trainor (Matt Bomer)
  • Elasti-Woman aka Rita Farr (April Bowlby)
  • Crazy Jane (Diane Guerrero)

All led by modern-day mad scientist Niles Caulder aka The Chief (Timothy Dalton). Each member of the Doom Patrol suffered a horrible accident that gave them superhuman abilities, but also left them scarred and disfigured.

Part support group, part Super Hero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of superpowered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them. Season three opens on the culmination of Dorothy’s (Abi Monterey) confrontation with the Candlemaker that leads to a devastating loss.

The Doom Patrol is at a difficult crossroads and each member struggles to face who they are and who they want to be. And things get a whole lot more complicated when Madame Rouge (Michelle Gomez) arrives in a time machine with a very specific mission, if only she could remember it.

The first three episodes of Doom Patrol season 3 will debut THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23
with subsequent episodes launching weekly every Thursday through November 11 on HBO Max.
