Offseason SXSW Review: A Downright Creepy Horror Flick

Offseason debuted at SXSW 2021 and it is a horror movie that is downright creepy — although it does have some issues.

SXSW Off Season

In Offseason a woman travels to a small desolate island town after her mother’s grave is vandalized, only to learn that there is something really not right with the whole town. On her deathbed, her mother tried to warn her that she did not want to be buried there because there is something wrong there. The townspeople have made a deal with a demon, and now she finds herself trapped there during the off season.

What I like most about this movie is just how completely and utterly creepy it is. There are moments that he score and the loud noises will really make you jump out of your skin. I am one of those people that gets really freaked out by the white eyes though, and they do that a lot. So I know that is part of why this movie stuck with me the way that it did. It is clearly lower budget, but still has moments that will get you.

The story itself leaves a little bit to be desired. It is a typical enough horror story that is predictable when you sit and think about it. However, it is still a lot of fun to speculate about while watching. And closing in at under an hour and a half makes it easier to sit through, and doesn’t give you many dragging moments, which is always appreciated.

Overall Offseason is a very interesting take on a small town horror movie, and it gave me some Stephen King vibes in a few spots. It seems like a story he would write and that had me glued to the screen even more. The ending is supposed to be a twist ending, and although I had it figured out before we got there, I still really enjoyed the movie.
