Crazy About Her is an interesting and unique take on the romantic comedy genre. While there are the generic beats of a RomCom, there is a lot to this movie that we haven’t seen before. The majority of it takes place inside a mental health facility and does a great job of shedding light on mental illness.
After a wild and crazy one night stand with Carla, Adri discovers that the only way to spend time with her again is to have himself checked into a psychiatric hospital. It turns out she is a patient there and he met her on a night that she escaped. After getting inside he befriends others patients and makes quite an impression on everyone.
What Works With Crazy About Her
One of my favorite parts of this movie is just how unique it feels. Romantic comedies have been around for years and years, and Crazy About Her puts a unique spin on what we are used to seeing. These two overcome a lot in the movie, and at the same time, it really does a great job of shedding light on the stigma of mental illness.
Besides Carla and Adri, this movie touches on a lot of different people that are in the mental health facility and their relationship with their loved ones as well as with Adri. I love this unique take on a romantic comedy. While we get to see Carla and Adri’s relationship grow and blossom, there is so much more to this movie and that is what really works. If it had just stuck to the two of them, I don’t think it would have worked as well.
What Doesn’t Work With Crazy About Her
At first I was watching the English dubbed version of Crazy About Her and honestly, it was driving me crazy! When the mouths don’t line up with the words, it is very distracting. I know that some people are ok with this, but know there is the option to watch the movie in its native language and put on English subtitles. Once I did that, I was able to enjoy the movie a lot more.
There are some things in the script that I am hoping were lost in translation. At one point a man kisses another man on the cheek and then says “don’t go crying to HR. Everyone is such a snowflake.” I get that the writers could have been trying to make a relevant joke but this truly felt a bit too insensitive. The same man also calls feminism garbage and mentally ill people “crazies”. I know we are not supposed to like his character, but it was too gross feeling for me.
Overall Thoughts
Crazy About Her does a great job of shedding light on the treatment and stigma of the mentally ill, and at the same time it gives us a cute romantic comedy. There are some parts of the script that had me cringing, even if that was the point I still hated the experience.
My favorite part about this movie is just how unique it is. While there are some familiarities of course, there is a lot that feels new and like I haven’t seen it before. Crazy About Her is not a perfect movie but it is still a great movie to watch with your girlfriends on a weekend night.
