The Great Review: A Hysterical Twist On A Moment In History

Hulu’s The Great is a hilarious period piece that tells a different story than the history books do of Catherine The Great.

If you are looking for a show that will take you away from the craziness of the world and have you laughing until you can’t breathe anymore, The Great on Hulu is for you. It is a totally different take on Catherine The Great than everyone knows. Of course, it is very loosely based on the truth, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth watching. In fact, it means quite the opposite.

From the very first episode you are sure to be hooked. I sure was. Nicholas Hoult is absolutely phenomenal and Elle Fanning is just as good. Their chemistry, or lack there of, is just fantastic. It raises this show to a whole new level. They are the main characters, Peter and Catherine, and clearly just do not like it each other. In fact, by the second episode Catherine is planning a coup on Peter and hoping to kill him so she can rule Russia instead.

As the show goes on, it just gets better and better. Nicholas plays the eccentric Peter III, and boy, does he know how to play eccentric. This show is so good you are going to want to hit “play next episode” as soon as one ends. My husband and I binged this ten episode show in just three nights — and trust me, we wish we had the time to do it faster than that.

Since then, we have watched it a second time, and the jokes are just as good, and hit just as hard. One of my favorite ones from the whole season is when Peter says he has to get back to his whores… then turns it around to horses. It is hilarious. I could literally watch that scene over and over.

The Great — “The Beard” – Episode 102 — Catherine takes her first steps toward a coup. Taking advice from Marial, she attempts to seduce and recruit palace intellectual Count Orlo. It’s a disaster. However, after seeing Peter’s brutal treatment of local nobles and unwillingness to listen, he decides to join Catherine’s coup. Catherine (Elle Fanning) and Peter (Nicholas Hoult), shown. Overall Thoughts

Hulu’s The Great is a series that is worth watching at least once. But before watching, know that there is sex, language, and even violence in this show. One particular scene in the second episode made me look away. That didn’t take away from the whole series though — it was a just a brief moment that I didn’t care to watch. Although my husband did, and giggled while he watched it. Blech.

Probably my favorite part about this series is Nicholas and Elle. They both give stand out performances that really make it what it is. If you want to be thoroughly entertained by an off the wall series, The Great is for you!
