Dracula on Netflix Review: A Dark & Twisted Must Watch

Dracula on Netflix is a quick three episode series that is more than worth a binge-watch. If you like dark and twisted tales, it is for you!

I have always been a fan of horror – movies, books, television shows – and so as soon as I heard about the Dracula series on Netflix I was excited. Dracula is one of my favorite Universal monsters. I mean, how could he not be? I admit, the first episode of this series started off a bit slow. But if you power through the first hour, it will all be worth it. That is about when the first big twist comes and from there the story just gets more dark and twisted.

In Dracula we follow the journey of Count Dracula through centuries and get to know him better than we have in most Dracula shows and movies. There were several moments I even felt bad for the vampire. We see him take on his arch enemy. I bet you can all guess the last name of the family that he comes in contact with time and time again — yes, the Van Helsings.

Are The Episodes Too Long?

Each of the three episodes is feature length – around one and half hours – but the first one is the only one that was a bit slow for me. After that, they just got better and better. I became obsessed with what was going to happen next and it was hard to pull away from the TV.

So my answer is no, these episodes are not too long. The first one perhaps but as with most things you have to get the back story, and quite often that means starting off slow. If I said I didn’t wish there were more episodes when this came to an end, I would be lying. I have become quite obsessed with Claes Bang’s version of Dracula and would love to see more of him.

Not The Same Dracula

Fans of Dracula should know this is a much different version of the vampire. We get to know a different side of him. Also, some of the vampire myths we are used to are untrue in this show. For example, Dracula can see himself in the mirror. We see him step into the modern world and it is pretty amazing what happens. Of course he needs to find his away around things and, I must admit, I loved watching him tear up being able to watch the sun on television (since he cannot look at it directly).

This Netflix show really made me see things from Dracula’s point of view, and I loved that. Like I said above, he has always been one of my favorite monsters, but this made me love him just a little bit more. Perhaps because I feel like I understand him now.

The Ending Though?

I have seen a lot of mixed feelings on the ending of Netflix’s Dracula show. But honestly, I kind of loved it. I thought it was the perfect way to end it. Since I hate to give spoilers, I don’t want to get too much into it. But let me just tell you that for me, it was a satisfying ending after investing four and a half hours in this series. It came completely by surprise, but was also… perfect.
