Costume Express

My family loves Halloween. It has always been one of my and my husband’s favorite holidays and so of course, my daughters both feel the same way about it. We plan group family costumes every year – and start planning usually months in advance. Sometimes we make our own costumes, but that can take way too long and you never know what the finished product will look like. Recently, we have started purchasing our group costumes online. So when I came across CostumeExpress.com, the family-friendly online costume retailer, boy was I excited! Finally I was able to find an adult female costume that was suitable for a mom to wear – we all know there are too many out there that are not. I had a blast going through the CostumeExpress® Top 10 Lists to help figure out what we wanted to be this year. There is everything from Disney Decedents (loved that movie) to Inside Out characters to Baymax to Super Heroes! CostumeExpress.com really has it all.

Costume Express    Costume Express

These top 10 lists feature the season’s top trending costumes, which include characters from the biggest TV and movie releases this year:

This year, my family went with a Star Wars theme that we plan to show off at Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party! We are going to be female Boba Fett (me! I can’t wait), a Storm Trooper (my husband), Rey (my 4 year old), and R2D2 (my 2 year old). I was shocked at how well these costumes were made – they look just like the characters do! I was so comfortable wearing my Boba Fett costume for a couple of hours (just to test it out of course). These are costumes that we will be able to use for more than just Halloween. I can tell that they will still be as good as new even years down the road. They are good for imaginative and lifelong play – I am a total kid at heart so I was excited to get myself a costume I will probably wear a little too often. With Costume Express you get your money’s worth and then some. My daughter loves her Rey costume so much that she has barely taken it off since it arrived. That being said, I am not the least bit worried that she will ruin it before it is time to wear it – I know it is made well enough that it will not even be an issue. She is one serious Jedi – that is for sure!

I have also noticed that their costumes are very true to size. I am so used to ordering at least one size larger and with Costume Express that is not necessary. Costume Express is big on family – and I could tell because they offer costumes for people that kids look up to and aspire to be. My Little Pony: Equestria Girls Friendship Games

Disclosure: Mama Smith’s Review Blog received this item in exchange for her honest review. All opinions expressed are 100% hers.

Equestria Girls

My daughters are HUGE My Little Pony fans. They love Friendship is Magic as well as the Equestria Girls series (they even love the old shows that I grew up watching). Anything My Little Pony is a must have in our house. And I must admit, my husband and I enjoy watching the shows and movies along with the girls. On September 26th, My Little Pony: Equestria Girls: Friendship Games aired on Discovery Family Channel. We were lucky enough to have received the DVD before it was aired, but we still watched it while it was on TV. We have alreayd watching this movie through several times – and the whole family enjoys it! We love the characters and I cannot wait to see even more movies from the Equestria Girls!

Equestria Girls

In 2013’s original film My Little Pony Equestria Girls, Twilight Sparkle’s crown was stolen from the Crystal Empire, and she pursued the thief, Sunset Shimmer, into an alternate world where she finds herself turned into…a teenage girl! To regain her crown and return to Equestria, Twilight had to learn how to fit into this strange, new world and defeat Sunset Shimmer in a competition to become crowned Princess of the Fall Formal at Canterlot High.
Equestria Girls
My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks, released in 2014, found Canterlot High hosting a musical showcase, and Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, and Fluttershy performing with their new band, The Rainbooms. But when The Dazzlings, a new girl group, arrived at CHS and convinced everyone to turn the friendly showcase into a Battle of the Bands, tensions mounted between the competing musical acts.  After a reformed Sunset Shimmer realized that The Dazzlings may not be ordinary girls and were after something far more sinister than just being named Best Band at Canterlot High, Princess Twilight was called upon to help win a battle that would determine the fate of the entire school.
Now, in the new animated film My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Friendship Games, Canterlot High meets its rival school, Crystal Prep Academy, in a competition that’s a long-standing tradition –The Friendship Games: a series of exciting events that includes archery, motocross, and rollerskating!  Sunset Shimmer is tasked with keeping magic out of the games to keep things fair while she and her friends compete against Crystal Prep’s top students led by someone with an equal amount of interest in Equestrian magic – this world’s Twilight Sparkle. Continue the journey through high school with the Mane 6 in this alternate My Little Pony universe, and find out what happens next in My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Friendship Games!

The movie will be released in stores on DVD and Blu-ray from Shout! Factory Kids on October 13th, 2015, as well as available for digital download on iTunes, Google Play, and Amazon.

Equestria Girls Gift Set

Join Twilight Sparkle and her Canterlot High friends in three animated adventures! My Little Pony: Equestria Girls (Three Movie Gift Set), which includes the new full-length feature film, My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Friendship Games, will be released on October 13 in the U.S. and Canada from Shout! Kids, in collaboration with Hasbro Studios.  With a special lenticular cover that features a transforming Twilight Sparkle, the box set houses all three films released from the My Little Pony: Equestria Girls canon, Equestria Girls, Rainbow Rocks and Friendship Games. In conjunction with the film debut, Hasbro Studios and Sony Music/Legacy Recordings today announced the global digital release of the accompanying “My Little Pony Equestria Girls Friendship Games” soundtrack. The album features ten original songs from the movie and the same award winning songwriters and voice talent as the “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” animated series. As you all know I am a huge gamer, a huge Star Wars fan, and a huge Disney fan. So of course, I already have pretty much every figure and playset for the Disney Infinity 3.0 – and today I will have to head to the store to pick up the latest one.

Disney Interactive and Lucasfilm today launched Star Wars Rise Against the Empire for Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition, a new Play Set that takes place during the original Star Wars trilogy. Developed by Studio Gobo, in partnership with Avalanche Software, the Play Set takes players through the iconic moments and adventures from Episodes IV-VI, including the characters, vehicles and locations.

The Star Wars Rise Against the Empire Play Set is available at a suggested retail price of $34.99 and includes the Play Set piece, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa figures. Han Solo, Chewbacca and Darth Vader figures are also now available and sold separately for a suggested retail price of $13.99.

In the Star Wars Rise Against the Empire Play Set, players will embark on galaxy-spanning missions with legendary Jedi Luke Skywalker, Rebel leader Princess Leia Organa, heroic smuggler Han Solo and his trusty co-pilot Chewbacca to help defeat Darth Vader and overthrow the evil Galactic Empire. With non-stop action, players can explore open world planets like Tatooine on foot or on a Bantha, take down AT-AT walkers on snowspeeders on Hoth, out-maneuver stormtroopers on speeder bikes on Endor, and partake in epic space battles in an X-wing in attempt to destroy the Death Star.

Disney Infinity 3.0

In addition to the characters playable in Rise Against the Empire Play Set, fans will also be able to unlock and play with other Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition Star Wars characters from other Star Wars Play Sets.

Additionally, the Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition Starter Pack and Disney•Pixar Inside Out Play Set are currently available in major North American retail stores for the PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment systems, Xbox One and Xbox 360 and the Wii U™ system from Nintendo.  Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition is rated E10+ by the ESRB and developed by Avalanche Software in partnership with Ninja Theory, Sumo Digital, Studio Gobo and United Front Games.  Additional Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition Play Sets, Power Discs and figures will be available later this year.

Disney Infinity 3.0

Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition is the latest installment in the highly successful Disney Infinity “toys-to-life” franchise, bringing together characters from across The Walt Disney Company for the ultimate family gaming experience. In its third iteration, players will again utilize real-world interactive figures to activate original storylines (Play Sets) in the virtual game worlds of popular Star Wars franchises and create new adventures with a variety of characters from Marvel, The Walt Disney Co. and Disney•Pixar properties in the Toy Box mode.

DIY Oogie Boogie Inspired Trick or Treat Bags Perfect for MNSSHP

Oogie Boogie Trick or Treat Bags DIY

My fellow blogger and friend over at As The Bunny Hops recently posted an amazing DIY duct tape bag that she made to look like Oogie Boogie from The Nightmare Before Christmas. I showed my husband and asked if he thought we could make them a little bit bigger and use them as the girls’ trick or treat bags for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party at Disney World when we go. He pondered for a moment and then said “well, why not – but with actual burlap instead of duct tape.” So we headed to our local craft store and the rest is history!

The Bag

I started with burlap fabric twice as long as the size I wanted for the finished bag.  I folded the fabric in half length wise with the inside of the bag facing out.  Burlap isn’t really one-sided but I did have a seam on the edge of my fabric that I wanted on the inside.  I then sewed up both sides with my overlock stitcher.  This could be done with a regular sewing machine or possibly skipped and just held together with pins.  The only reason I did it was to hold the edges together for the hand sewing next step.

Oogie Boogie Thread

I then turned the bag right-side out.  Using a large knitting needle and thick yarn I hand sewed the three sealed sides of the bag.  This was purely for decoration since I had already sewn the seams with my stitcher so I just made it the way I wanted it to look, which is jagged to match Oogie’s style.

The Drawstring

For the top I folded the bag back inside out and folded down an inch and a half.  I placed a piece of drawstring in the fold and then using the yarn did a wide stitch to hold the fold over and the drawstring in.  I had the ends of the string come out of the fabric in one of the edges.  Then, I placed a drawstring stopper on the string and tied the ends together.

Oogie-Boogie-Faces

The Faces

For the face I used the cut file from As The Bunny Hops and cut out the faces on a piece of black suede cloth.  I used the same yarn and large needle to sew on the faces to the front of the bag.  To finish up the bags on the side opposite the drawstring I used the yarn to sew on a decorative spider.

A Night at Cirque de la Symphonie by Symphoria

Disclosure: Mama Smith was provided with tickets to this event. All opinions expressed are 100% her own.

Circ-De-La-Symphonie-Feat2

Last night my husband and I went on a date night with another couple. We decided to attend Cirque de la Symphonie by Symphoria at The Oncenter and boy were we glad we did. The entire show was breathtaking – just absolutely amazing. There are really no words to describe it. My husband and I are big fans of the symphony and music in general – so just seeing the orchestra was a treat. They played beautifully and chose some really meaningful songs. This coupled with the incredible performances put our night over the top. Many times the entire audience was gasping and applauding because they were so full of emotion.

symphoria

I only have one small complaint about the night and that was that some of the clapping was ill timed. I would have loved to watch the areal acrobat’s performance to Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 without all of the applause. Now, I know that is nothing that could have been prevented. Her performance was so emotional and I can only imagine how much more powerful it would have been without the audience clapping so much over the music. In general, the acts were wonderful. Everyone was so talented and I loved the bits of humor that were sprinkled throughout the show. Along with acrobatics there was magic, juggling, and dancing. The conductor, Lawrence Loh, was a breath of fresh air. He was a lot of fun and even joined in on a magic act! The night flew by and I could not believe when the show was over. We will definitely be attending more shows in the 2015-16 season – I cannot wait for the Star Wars concert.

symphoria

Symphoria is something you can take the kids to – we saw many children there and would have taken ours if it did not start so late (their normal bedtime is 7pm and the show did not start until 7:30pm). All children under 18 are free making this a fun family event as well! Purchase tickets here.

Cartoon Network’s Clarence: Dust Buddies is now available on DVD

Disclosure: Mama Smith’s Review Blog received this item in exchange for her honest review. All opinions expressed are 100% hers.

Clarence

One of my family’s favorite channels is Cartoon Network. With cartoons like Adventure Time, Teen Titans GoRegular Show, and Clarence – we are able to sit down as a family and laugh. I love that some jokes are subtle enough that my 2.5 year old can watch it and not know why mommy and daddy are laughing so hard. There are also jokes that my girls get of course, and we are totally fine with it. We have many Cartoon Network shows set to record and our family time consists of watching one or two each night. Clarence has been a front runner for us since it came out – we are all huge fans! My 4 year old loves Jeff – one of Clarence’s friends. This show is definitely fun for the whole family so when we got a copy of Clarence: Dust Bunnies, we were thrilled! My girls were so excited to add this to their “car DVD holder” and my husband and I were happy to have a new DVD to listen to as we drive. This DVD features some of our favorite episodes – definitely check out Lizard Day Afternoon and Jeff Wins. We love this show so much that we have discussed going as the characters for Halloween. I highly recommend this show if you want something you can enjoy along with your kids.

Star Wars

As you all know, I am a ridiculously huge Star Wars fan. Why CNY Needs the FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant

4

FitzPatrick

My name is Brett Smith and I am an Operations Instructor at James A FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant. I grew up in upstate NY, originally in the Finger Lakes region. My parents were farmers turned small business owners. When times became tough my parents sold their business and my father got a job as a security guard at FitzPatrick and moved the family to Oswego. This was 13 years ago. I attended Cayuga Community College and then enlisted in the US Navy out of Oswego. The Navy gave me an unbelievable experience and an education in nuclear power plant operation and maintenance; I gained a passion for nuclear power. In the Navy I met and married my wife and started my family -we have two amazing young girls. For 9 years we lived in the south from Virginia down to Florida, always on the Ocean. In the Navy I saw a lot of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. When I got the opportunity to return to CNY I jumped and brought my family to a place they had never been. I was lucky to get a job back in nuclear power at FitzPatrick, now teaching others how to operate and hopefully instilling the same passion for nuclear power that the Navy gave me.

I support the local community. My family goes out of our way to shop at local small businesses. We travel daily to Pulaski, Mexico, New Haven, Central Square, Fulton, Phoenix and Oswego to get our goods. Sometimes it may be cheaper and easier to shop online or at large corporations but we know the hardships of being a small business and we want to make sure our communities stay strong and vibrant.

We attend the community events from all the farmers markets to Maple Weekend, Fall Fest, Pumpkin Fest, Porch Fest, Harbor Fest, and of course the Great New York State Fair. We donate to every child that comes asking, we support the schools, the athletics, the arts, the charities, the clubs, and the organizations. I am just one of 600 highly trained and skilled workers that are employed by FitzPatrick. The other 599 families all support their local communities as much as my family does throughout Oswego, Oneida, and Onondaga counties. FitzPatrick regularly supports local charities like United Way, the Rescue Mission, and the Food Pantries, as well our Adopt-A-School program where FitzPatrick donated $500 each to 22 different Oswego County schools last year and each department added additional fund raising for those schools to give to families in need in their district around the Holidays. Through payroll and charitable organizations, FitzPatrick contributes more that $74 million every year to the local economy. FitzPatrick paid $12.3 million in school property taxes in 2012 to the Mexico district which accounted for 51% of the school district’s total tax levy. In the state, nuclear power employs 3,440 workers. Additionally thousands of jobs are provided to contractors and service workers during outages at each site. More than $463 million of materials, services and fuel for the nuclear energy industry are purchased annually from more than 1,600 New York companies.

FitzPatrick supports the Country’s veterans. A large majority of the people I work with each day have a similar military background as me. The Navy helped pave the way for nuclear power and create operators, radiation specialists, chemists, and maintenance technicians to protect and defend our Country. Nuclear power plants welcome these veterans returning to the civilian world with open arms. When a job opened alongside mine I quickly asked my supervisor to consider one of my shipmates for the position. I explained how I trusted my life every day at sea in his hands as he also did with me and that that same dedication would be applied to his job here. They didn’t pass up the opportunity to support another veteran and I am proud to again be serving alongside my shipmate every day at FitzPatrick.

FitzPatrick employs families. I run into my father at work. My aunt and uncle both retired from FitzPatrick and their daughter and son-in-law work here now. My family has been in training, security, operations, maintenance, and administration here. There is currently a third generation FitzPatrick employee on site. FitzPatrick provides a sustaining, lasting impact to the families of our community.

The six Nuclear power facilities in New York account for 33% of the state’s electricity production. Nuclear power is a near zero greenhouse gas emission power source. Nuclear power has less Life-Cycle CO2 emissions than, coal, natural gas, biomass, solar PV, and Hydroelectric. Nuclear energy in New York accounts for 61% of the emission-free electricity. Nuclear power in New York prevents 22 million metric tons of CO2 emissions a year, the equivalent of 4 million passenger cars on the road.

Nuclear power is reliable, it does not depend on the flow of water, shining of the sun, or blowing of the wind. Nuclear power plants provide “always on” electricity. FitzPatrick has been producing electricity continuously, safely, and reliably for 351 days since the end of its last refueling outage. Over the last 7 years FitzPatrick has produced 90% of its full potential power around the clock. This ensures no matter what the situation is the power will be there for nearly 800,000 residential homes.

FitzPatrick is committed to safety. Its employees regularly train and practice emergency response to be ready for any scenario. FitzPatrick safely and securely stores its used fuel on site.

“America’s 99 nuclear energy facilities are among the safest and most secure industrial facilities. Multiple automatic safety systems, the industry’s commitment to comprehensive safety procedures and stringent federal regulation keep nuclear energy facilities and neighboring communities safe. After more than a half-century of commercial nuclear energy production in the United States—more than 3,900 reactor years of operation—there have been no radiation related health effects linked to the operation of nuclear energy facilities. Numerous studies, including those from the National Cancer Institute and the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation, show that U.S. nuclear power plants effectively protect the public’s health and safety.”

I am proud of my job, I am proud of my state, and I am proud of my family. I dream of a life in which my children and their children grow up in the wonders of Upstate NY. Of all the places I have been in the world there is no other place I would rather raise my family. From Niagara to NYC, St. Lawrence to the Finger Lakes; New York has so much to offer in both natural beauty and its inhabitants. I hope for a future where we have done everything we can to protect the environment and the economy of New York for the future generations. Ensuring that FitzPatrick and the other nuclear power plants in the state maintain running are keys to achieving those goals. The closure of any of our nuclear plants will have an immediate negative impact on our environment, our people, our businesses, and our communities.

Please stand with us, show your support, and help #SaveFitzPatrick.
