Mark Grayson grapples with his darkest impulses in a brutal, brilliant Invincible Season 4. Can he protect his family without losing his soul?
After the wild events of Invincible Season 3, I wasn’t sure if it could sustain its momentum without feeling like it was just retreading the “Mark gets beaten up” trope. Having screened the first six episodes of Season 4, I can happily report that the show has pivoted into something much more cerebral and haunting. This isn’t just about world-ending threats anymore; it’s about the internatl struggles of a hero who has finally crossed a line he can’t un-cross.
The premiere picks up the pieces of the aftermath of Angstrom Levy’s death, and the psychological toll on Mark sends ripples through the entire season. Steven Yeun’s performance has shifted, and it is brilliant. There’s a new tremor in his voice. He’s quieter than usual. He is clearly completely and utterly distraught. Seeing Mark constantly down on himself is bizarre and, frankly, a bit heartbreaking. We’re used to his optimism, but this season, he’s a changed man. He’s terrified – not of the villains, but of himself.
The most compelling (and terrifying) part of these first six episodes is watching Mark realize that killing Levy wasn’t a one-time fluke. Every time his back is against the wall, that urge to solve his problems with finality creeps back in. He wants what’s best for his family, but his definition of “whatever it takes” is starting to look a lot like his father’s.
We see a lot of familiar faces returning to the fold in Invincible Season 4, weaving back into the narrative in ways that feel earned rather than forced. Most notably, we get the return of the demon detective himself, Damien Darkblood. I don’t want to say too much about his specific role this season to avoid spoilers, but I will say that the episode centered around his involvement is easily one of my favorites of the entire series.
Thankfully, it’s not all doom and gloom. The relationship between Mark and Eve remains the emotional heartbeat of the series. In a world where everything is exploding, their stability is the only thing keeping Mark grounded.
I also have to shout out the increased screen time for Oliver. Watching him grow at an accelerated rate is such a unique sci-fi dynamic, and seeing him step into his own as a hero is a massive highlight. He brings a fresh energy to the show that balances out Mark’s heaviness. He’s fast, he’s capable, and he’s becoming a powerhouse in his own right.
If you were worried the show might soften its edge, don’t be. Season 4 does not pull any punches. The gore is as nasty and detailed as ever, serving as a constant reminder that super battles have real, messy consequences. The action sequences in the middle of the season are some of the most creative we’ve seen yet, utilizing the massive ensemble cast effectively.
Speaking of the cast, the roster is getting huge. With heavy hitters like J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, and newcomers like Lee Pace and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, there’s a lot of ground to cover. While the season obviously prioritizes Mark and his inner circle, it does a commendable job of checking in on the supporting cast without the pacing feeling sluggish.
I won’t dive into spoiler territory, but the reveals and twists packed into these first six episodes are genuine “jaw-on-the-floor” moments. The showrunners are weaving together the personal stakes of Mark’s morality with a looming threat that feels like it could actually alter the fate of humanity. And of course, the Viltrimites are not the only threats. There are so, so many. Each of which is captivating, exciting, and terrifying.
Invincible Season 4 is a dark, bloody, and deeply emotional exploration of what happens when a good person starts to believe their own darkness. I truly cannot wait to see how this season wraps up.
