This season, Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office. Homelander has her in his sights, and under his control. Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Ryan and his job as The Boys’ leader because the rest of the team are fed up with his lies. The stakes higher than ever before. The Boys must find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan joins the cast and works closely alongside Butcher. Karl Urban and Jeffrey Dean Morgan have some of the best scenes in The Boys season 4, although if we are being honest, this entire season is packed with unforgettable moments.
Weaving In Real Life References
Somtehing that The Boys has always done extremely well is weaving in references to real life events, as well as political and social issues. While Homelander isn’t exactly Donald Trump, he certainly has some of his qualities, including a brainwashed cult of followers.
There is a lot happening in The Boys season 4, but Homelander versus Starlight is a big part of it. We see their followers go at it with each other time and time again, which often leads to undesirable outcomes.
Unapologetically Pushing Boundaries
The Boys works so well because it is unafraid to fully embrace itself in this world. The creatives do not care what viewers think about references to words like woke, and lock her up. They are going to use this show to express political failures on all sides, and it is often funny, but sad, as we know it to be true. Exaggerated at times yes, but still true.
This series pushes boundaries over and over again. Not only on the political side either. The Boys season 4 delivers on the gore – perhaps more than we have ever seen before. It doesn’t shy away from adding sex in when it fits the story either. This is the Supes bersus the Boys and things get ugly, understandably so.
Overall Thoughts
A slight criticism of the previous season is that the story did not seem to evolve enough. The Boys season 4 propels the story forward, often in unexpected ways. Somehow we, as the audience, find ourselves feeling bad for characters we never thought we would (cough, The Deep, cough) and having mixed feelings on those we loved before.
It is hard to dive in and discuss this season without spoilers, because there is so much happening and it is best to be surprised when it does. Just know that this season hits the ground running and never slows down. Not ever.
Just as Gen V did before it, The Boys ties these two series together perfectly. The very end of The Boys season 4 makes it clear Gen V season 2 is going to pick right up where this ended — and we cannot wait to see what comes next.
