The Killer is a dark and twisted crime noir that features an incredible performance from Michael Fassbender.
Right from the opening scene of The Killer, viewers will be glued to the screen as they hang off the edge of their seat. And they will remain that way until the very end. Michael Fassbender is captivating, proving that he and director David Fincher make quite the pair. Throw in a chilling score, stunning visuals, and cinematography that will make your head spin (in a good way), and you have a fantastic watch.
This movie follows “the killer”, played by Michael Fassbender, after an assassination attempt goes horribly wrong. He now finds himself on the other side of things, but the difference is, he knows how to put up a fight. A true crime noir that gets violent and dark, while also highlighting that this killer knows his stuff, The Killer is a well shot, well acted, ride.
Broken up into chapters, the pacing of The Killer flows seamlessly. These chapters have names which allow the audience to know exactly who is going to be interacting with the killer, but it does so in a way that makes viewers feel like they are a part of the story, rather than giving things away. This could have easily tipped the scale into predictable, and it doesn’t.
That being said, once you get to know the killer, it is easy to figure out what his moves are going to be — right up to a very shocking decision that almost feels so out of place, it might leave a bad taste in some mouths. It is impossible to discuss, as it is a major spoiler, but this writer thinks you will know exactly what we are talking about when you see the film.
Michael Fassbender carries this film. That isn’t said to take away from the other actors, who all serve their purpose rather nicely (Tilda Swinton especially). We are taken on a journey with the killer. This is his story. Fassbender narrates so that we know what he is thinking at all times. There is not a lot of dialogue to start, although it gradually increases as we get further and further in.
This is a revenge story at its core. A crime noir. It is dark and gritty and filled with bloodshed. It is intense, largely in part due to the cinematography and score. It is enough to give you goosebumps as you hang on the edge of your seat waiting to see what the killer is going to do next.
The Killer is coming to theaters, as well as streaming. If you are able to see it on the big screen, do so. This is one of those films that just plays better in a theater setting. That doesn’t mean that you should skip it if your local theater isn’t showing it, however. Curl up on the couch and watch Michael Fassbender go on a methodical rampage filled with revenge.
The Killer comes to select theaters on October 27th and Netflix on November 10th.
