Pencils vs. Pixels Is An Animation Fans Dream Documentary

Pencils vs. Pixels is a compelling documentary that tells the story of the evolution of animation from 2D to 3D, without completely favoring one over the other.

Pencils vs. Pixels review

There are many mediums for entertainment out there, but there is something truly special about animation. Many will agree. Animation has been through quite the journey, from hand drawn 2D to computer 3D, and each version has something to bring to the table. Pencils vs. Pixels details that journey while being sure to honor both versions of the medium, and never bashing on one or the other.

Pencils vs. Pixels is a celebration of the unique magic of 2D hand-drawn animation and an exploration of how the Disney Renaissance of the late 1980s and early 1990s led to an animation boom that was quickly upended by the computer animation revolution that followed.

Narrated by Ming-Na Wen, Pencils vs. Pixels features many of the legendary artists who brought these now-classic films to life as they guide us through the last few decades of animation and into the future that’s yet to come.

Animation experts, from historians to animators themselves, offer their own personal stories and thoughts in this documentary, which is a celebration of the magic of animation. Leonard Maltin, Kevin Smith, Pete Docter, Mark Henn, Tony Bancroft, and Seth MacFarlane are just a few that bring their insights to the table. Each and every person included in this documentary tells entertaining stories.

All too often documentaries can be dry, but not this one. The pacing is on point, and it flows perfectly from point A to point B. While it heavily touches on Disney Animation Studios, it spreads the wealth in talking about many other studios as well. This is important because there are many viewpoints. The main theme, however, is that animators all have a passion and love for what they do. As do the viewers and animation lovers.

There is something to be said about hand drawn 2D animation. Not only is it how it all started, but it has shaped the way for the 3D animation. Both are different pieces to the same puzzle. In Pencils vs. Pixels, it is said many times that those working in the industry hope that there will be a return, at least in part, to 2D animation. The newer folks entering the workforce now have more training in 3D computer style, but everyone holds a special place in their hearts for 2D.

Pencils vs. Pixels is a love letter to animation. It is a dream documentary for fans of the medium. It never bores, or slows down, and always remains interesting and intriguing. The selection of those participating is well rounded and introduces things that perhaps even though who consider themselves animation connoisseurs didn’t know.

A love letter to animation, this documentary tells the journey from 2D animation to 3D animation, while keeping the hope alive that 2D will return to the forefront once again. It is sure to never completely favor one style over the other.
