Yes, that was Phyla-Vell in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 mid credit scene! Learn all about this new to the MCU character from the comics.
Warning: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 spoilers ahead!
During the first Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 post credit scene a new team was revealed. While fans already know most of the members – Groot, Rocket, Kraglin, and Cosmo – there were two new faces. One is Adam Warlock, which we met in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. This is not much of a surprise to most viewers, as it was highly rumored that he would be one who would stick around. You don’t bring in someone like him from the comics to just be a minor character in one movie.
The other new Guardians of the Galaxy member is a little girl. One that we very briefly got to know as the team was breaking experiments out of the High Evolutionary’s laboratory. Rocket calls her Phyla, and if it isn’t clear then, the second she powers up for battle it is, this is Phyla-Vell. She has the same blond hair and energy around her fists. Her face doesn’t quite have the same markings, but it does have some.
But who is Phyla-Vell? Here’s everything you need to know about Phyla-Vell, from the comic books and how she will likely tie into The Marvels and the rest of the MCU.
Who Is Phyla-Vell? The Newest Guardian of the Galaxy Explained
As with most Marvel teams, there have been several versions of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the comic books. James Gunn has always been vocal that Vol. 3 is the last time you will see the Guardians as you know them, and everyone just assumed that meant one of them would die. No one did, but they did go their separate ways, leaving a new team to take over the job of guarding the galaxy. The new Guardians of the Galaxy team in the comic books (pictured above) is much different, however, as it includes Star-Lord, Groot, Beta Ray Bill, Cosmic Ghost Rider, Moondragon, and Phyla-Vell.
Who Is Phyla-Vell?
Phyla-Vell is the daughter of Elysius, a genetically engineered woman patterned after the Eternals of Titan. Her father? Well, that is a bit more complicated. Elysius uses the preserved DNA of her dearly departed lover, Mar-Vell, to create Phyla-Vell. She ages her up to young adulthood and implants memories of a life growing up on Titan. This is clearly a bit different in the MCU version, as she was created by the High Evolutionary.
Phyla-Vell has had several codenames in the comic books: Captain Marvel, Quasar, and Martyr. She has ties to Starfox, who we already know is played by Harry Styles in the MCU, so we could certainly see them interacting in the future. Although this version is much younger than him.
What Are Phyla-Vell’s Powers?
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phyla-Vell is clearly still a child, however that doesn’t mean she isn’t powerful. Rocket Racoon trusted her enough to bring her onto his team, and we see her briefly power up as they go running into battle. She balls her hands into fists and they emit some kind of energy. In the Marvel comic books, she uses Quantum Bands, which we have seen Kamala Khan introduce into the MCU in Ms. Marvel.
Phyla-Vell’s powers include:
- Super-Human Strength
- Super-Human Durability
- Super-Human Speed
- Super-Human Agility
- Super-Human Reflexes
- Flight
- Self-Sustenance (can survive in the vacuum of space)
- Augmented Physical Abilities
- Energy Locking
- Ambient-Energy Metabolics
Phyla-Vell is also a highly skilled hand to hand combatant and sword fighter. When in possession of the Quantum Bands using up too much power in her quantum device will drain them. In the Annihilus story line, her bands are corrupted. This will bring out a dark side of Phyla that causes her to think all life forms are enemies.
Phyla-Vell and Moondragon
In Marvel comics, Phyla-Vell is a lesbian. She and Moondragon are in love. Does this mean that we could be seeing Moondragon down the road? We certainly hope so as the two work incredibly well together. As of now though, the MCU version of Phyla-Vell is quite young. Too young for a love interest. So if this does happen, it will be much later.
Meet Phyla-Vell in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is in theaters now.
