Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves perfectly embodies what it is like to get together with your friends and have a game night. It’s a blast!
There is nothing quite like getting together with your friends, laughing your butts off, and having a good time. Those vibes are exactly what Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves sets out to deliver, and it fully succeeds. This film is made to embrace the spirit of the Dungeons & Dragons game, and luckily, it does just that.
For All D&D Knowledge Levels
The best thing about it though, is that this movie is for everyone. If you have played Dungeons & Dragons all your life? Great. Only joined in a campaign once or twice? No problem. Never played a day in your life or don’t know anything about the popular Role Playing Game? That’s fine too. What Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves does so well is tell a story that works for viewers, no matter what their experience level with the game is.
What the audience sees is a group of misfits that come together for a common purpose — to take out a baddie. They have a whole lot of fun along the way, which makes for a quite enjoyable watch. Just as in the gameplay, they must try different things in order to succeed. Sometimes they fail and sometimes the outcome is not at all as expected. For those who are familiar with D&D, it is fun to pick up on certain lingo and Easter Eggs that are sprinkled throughout the movie. However, for those that don’t know any of these terms, the writing does a great job of explaining them so you don’t have to know.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has the perfect blend of fantasy, humor, and heart. There are a lot of incredible action sequences throughout the movie that help to keep the pacing up — something that is extremely important when it comes to a movie that is over two hours long. Thankfully there is a lot of fun to be had as this group fumbles their way through their goals. There are surprises around several corners (just wait for that hilarious cameo) that just add to the playful vibes.
The biggest issue with this film is that it is a tad too long. While the runtime isn’t really felt, it does feel like it is coming to an end, but then keeps going. Not necessarily a bad thing in this instance, because what we do get in the end, makes the entire movie worth watching. There is a truly touching moment that will have even the coldest person tearing up. We weren’t expecting that much heart and emotion to bleed through in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, but after spending so long with these likable characters, it is impossible not to fall in love with them.
An Incredible Cast
Which brings us to our next point — this cast is phenomenal. Each and every one of them brings something to the table that takes this film to the next level. It is very clear they all put their heart and souls into their roles, which just makes the movie that much more fun.
Chris Pine plays Edgin, who is sort of the glue of the group. He is funny in his own way, and has a really wholesome reason for the quest they are going on. It should come as no surprise that Michelle Rodriguez (Holga) is the badass one. She kicks some serious butt and while she is a woman of few words, she is going to capture your heart. Regé-Jean Page (Xenk) is in the film a whole lot less than we would have liked, but he has some of the funniest moments. He is so straight-faced and literal, that he is absolutely hilarious.
When it comes to Justice Smith, who plays the “so-so sorcerer” Simon, you are just going to want to give him a hug. He is in need of a serious confidence boost and it is impossible not to root for him. Sophia Lillis (Doric) is a Druid with the ability to turn into animals. She is smart and always knows what form she can take in order to help the team accomplish what they need to.
Then there is Hugh Grant. We don’t want to say too much about his character, Forge, but boy is he great in this role. He evokes all of the emotions that he should from the viewers. Last, but certainly not least, we need to talk about Chloe Coleman. This girl is going places. She can act her butt off. To be in scenes opposite these veteran actors and shine so bright is not an easy feat. But she pulls it off.
Overall Thoughts
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves delivers exactly what it sets out to. This movie embraces the spirit of D&D, which is to get together with your friends and have a good time as you step into a world of fantasy. There is no right or wrong way to dive into a role playing game, and this movie proves it. The characters are all great, and they each bring something to the table that makes this movie special.
The emotional bits really sneak up on you, so be prepared to possibly shed a tear or two (or sob like a baby). What works so well about this film is that can be enjoyed by players and non-players alike. No matter your knowledge level of D&D, you will be able to have a blast with Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which is exactly what it was made for.
We have our fingers crossed for more… lots more. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves hits theaters on March 31st, and you don’t want to miss it.
