The DC’s Stargirl season 3 premiere is a great start to what is sure to be a high stakes, action packed, season.

The premiere episode of DC’s Stargirl season 3 does a great job of immediately sucking viewers back into the world of Blue Valley. It spends the first couple of minutes on a montage that highlights where all of the main players in the show have been and what they are up to. Montages almost always work in a series like this, and it absolutely does with Stargirl.

There are a lot of little breadcrumbs sprinkled throughout this season 3 premiere episode that are sure to become something bigger as the main plot and subplots develop. Certain dialogue and actions give off big hints of what is to come, without making it too predictable.

All of the friends are back, but things look a little bit different. With the entire season 3 titled Frenemies it is clear where things are headed. As seen in just the first episode, Courtney is back to her optimistic and forgiving self, happy to work alongside some of her former enemies. The new Justice Society of America has added an unexpected member — Cindy Burman — and has another ex-villain trying out for the team.

We don’t want to ruin what else happens in this episode, but just know that not everyone is thrilled with this decision. Some people are suspicious of others, and aren’t happy that Courtney is willing to give them another shot.

Another big change this season is seeing the full on return of Starman. Sure, he would pop up every now and again in the previous seasons but now he is back and living with Courtney and her family. He promises to let her keep the cosmic staff as well as to train her to the best of his ability.

Of course there is some underlying jealousy there and it becomes clear that one of the conflicts in this season is going to be between Courtney, Sylvester, and the staff. However, seeing Pat have his best friend back is heartwarming.

In true Stargirl fashion this episode ends off on a cliffhanger, which is what fans have come to expect from the series. There is a murder, we won’t say of who, and there is a very prominent suspect — which almost feels like a set up.

This is the biggest shock of the episode, which doesn’t have many other twists and turns. However, as the introduction to a new season with new conflicts, it makes sense that it would be mostly set up for what is to come. In the past Stargirl has spread out the action through the season, and has several episodes that are mostly dialogue, which is very much what this episode is.

So will the heroes and villains be able to join forces as frenemies and solve the murder? Only time will tell. With thirteen episodes it is sure to be a long, drawn out, process. But if DC’s Stargirl season 3 takes a page out of its own book, it will be able to give us a cohesive story that is entertaining from start to finish.

    About DC’s Stargirl Season 3

The third season finds Starman (Joel McHale) back from the dead and offering to train Courtney while she helps him adjust to his new life in the quiet town of Blue Valley.

But when there’s a murder that needs to be solved, the mystery will not only have our heroes questioning the former super-villains’ commitment to truly reforming, but lead Courtney, Pat and Starman to a secret that will shock them all to their very core.

DC’S STARGIRL returns to The CW on Wednesday, August 31 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.
