Chris Hemsworth is back as Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder, but that’s not all he can do. Here’s 8 Chris Hemsworth Non-MCU roles, ranked.

8 Chris Hemsworth Non-MCU Roles Ranked From Worst to Best

Chris Hemsworth is back as the beloved God of Thunder for more colorful mayhem in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder. As the only original member of The Avengers to receive a fourth solo film, it doesn’t look like we’ll be losing Thor anytime soon – which is maybe cemented by the character’s popularity within the MCU.

But, Hemsworth has proven that his worth isn’t limited to donning the mighty hammer, and he’s given the world a handful of gems where he explores the horizon of horror, comedy and suspenseful thrillers – and they aren’t to be missed!

Vacation (2015)

Carrying on the legacy of the National Lampoon’s Vacation franchise, the return to the Griswolds sees more disastrously funny capers befall the now grown Rusty (Ed Helms) and his family – one being a drawn-out interaction with brother-in-law Stone, played comically by Chris Hemsworth.

Watching the star branch out into comedy is a welcome change of pace; though we see him embrace light-hearted humor throughout the MCU, Vacation has Hemsworth toying with everything and anything he sets his sights on. The bedroom scene alone is enough to bring in non-stop laughter as Hemsworth refuses to waste a single second of screen-time.

A Perfect Getaway (2009)

Perhaps a forgotten feat buried deep within his filmography, A Perfect Getaway is the last type of movie you’d associate with Chris Hemsworth. Tagging along with star-studded cast Milla Jovovich, Timothy Olyphant, and Steve Zahn, Hemsworth plays an aggressive hot-head framed by serial killers (Jovovich and Zahn).

It’s strange to see the Aussie channel a role like Kale, however, it shows off his talented range as a newcomer to the big screen. This is another brief role with the film released in the same year as Star Trek but it’s a strong start nonetheless.

Extraction (2020)

Joining forces with the Russo Brothers again, Chris Hemsworth notably takes to action roles like a duck to water. Extraction has been met with mixed reviews but is never short of gritty adrenaline-packed sequences. Hemsworth in particular is praised for tackling John Wick-style fight scenes.

The story might not appeal to everyone, but seeing Hemsworth kicking some serious ass is always a win in my book.

Ghostbusters (2016)

Before hands start swinging, Ghostbusters is nowhere near as bad as some may want to remember it as. If anything, it leaves you hoping for Hemsworth to take on much more comedic roles. His character isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed yet he’s the most lovable of the bunch; Hemsworth’s frequent improvisation sets him miles ahead of the game.

If he were to re-join the franchise in the future I’m sure there’d be very few complaints, and we could even see him reunite with fellow MCU hero Paul Rudd.

The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

In this satirical middle finger to the slasher-horror genre, Chris Hemsworth plays academic jock Curt, who leads his friends to their (literally scripted) demise at the titular location. The Cabin in the Woods is very fun; fulfilling every trope under the sun, it holds plenty tricks up its sleeve and can make the switch from terror to hilarity with absolutely no warning.

While filmed prior to Thor, the movie found its release amidst Hemworth’s MCU debut and shows a different, though still heroic side to the Aussie native as he explores darker territory. It’s a clever addition to the horror collection and stands as one of Chris Hemsworth’s strongest films.

Bad Times at the El Royale (2018)

There’s no denying that Chris Hemsworth is incredibly charming. Even when he’s playing a Manson-type cult-leader, we’re drawn to him. Hemworth comes out of the works fully prepped and ready to deliver, taking a shining stand compared to the likes of veteran Jeff Bridges and Dakota Johnson.

The ensemble cast is fantastic; while it may initially seem like a mismatched, rambunctious group, they each manage to steal the show in their own way, especially Hemworth’s Billy Lee.

Star Trek (2009)

Chris Hemsworth’s role in Star Trek isn’t exactly huge but that doesn’t mean the film isn’t worth watching. Here, he plays the late father of James Kirk (Chris Pine) during the opening sequence.

Star Trek is actually Hemsworth’s first cinematic acting credit; going into the industry headstrong obviously left doors opening to bigger (not that Star Trek isn’t a major franchise) pastures for Hemsworth as two years later, he was stepping into the boots of Thor and has been on an upward stride ever since.

Rush (2013)

Telling the story of a rivalry for the ages, Hemsworth plays racing legend James Hunt while Daniel Bruhl is dark horse Nikki Lauda. The two are fantastic both together and individually; Rush is a great biopic to break down whether you’re a fan of the two drivers or not.

There’s a fair share of drama embedded into the plot; Hemsworth and Bruhl are captivating in their respective performances and have a powerful chemistry that translates off-screen as they revive the conflict between two greats.
