Claudia Forestieri interview

The new HBO Max original coming-of-age comedy series Gordita Chronicles is all about family, food, friendship, love, resilience, and the “American Dream”.

Gordita Chronicles follows Cucu “Gordita” Castelli, played by newcomer Olivia Goncalves, who has just said goodbye to all of her friends and family in Santo Domingo and moved to a 1985 Miami with her marketing executive father Víctor (Juan Javier Cardenas), bold and vivacious mother Adela (Diana Maria Riva), and status-obsessed older sister Emilia (Savannah Nicole Ruiz).

While life in America is far from what they imagined, the Castellis are determined to take charge of their strange new world.

The series was written by Claudia Forestieri and reflects her own experiences as Latinx family living in the USA. The inspiration came from some advice she received when she arrived in Los Angeles. Since she wanted to pursue a career in writing, someone told her “to write a script that only you can write”.

“People are always a little bit perplexed by me because I usually say I’m Dominican, even though I was born in Puerto Rico, because my parents are Dominican, and I grew up in the Dominican culture. Then, I have a Italian last name.. my mom is dark-skinned Dominican, and my dad is Dominican-Italian with green eyes. So, I’m like I going to write a script to explain me and my background so people can finally know why I am to way I am and why”, she explains.

Since I had the opportunity to watch all the episodes, I learned a lot about Dominican Republic culture. This is something I loved about this series because it’s showing that the Latinos are different.

I asked Claudia how she balanced mixing up the Dominican and American culture on the script and she stated “Dominicans are known for their happiness, their joy and their exuberance and I just wanted to bring all those positive things about Dominican culture to a TV show. And my mom [when I was growing up] she would tell me we had to speak in Spanish at home all the time and she’s like you might be in the United States, but you are Dominican, don’t get it wrong.

Zoe Saldana, Mariel Saldana and Cisely Saldana are executive producers and Eva Longoria directed the pilot and servers as executive producer as well. Forestieri still can’t believe Zoe Saldana and Eva Longoria are involved in Gordita Chronicles. “I still can’t believe it! I see they doing press talking about the show and I’m like “oh my God, they really did do this”, she commented.

All 10 episodes of Gordita Chronicles are streaming now on HBO Max.
