After what feels like forever, Space Force season 2 is coming to Netflix, and trust us when we say it was worth the wait. This season might be shorter, but it is bigger, bolder, and better. The cast has settled in nicely to their roles, and in their relationships with each other, which is not only clear in the show, but also when seeing them all together in the press day interview.

It was immediately clear just how much fun this cast has together. They were riffing off each other and joking around almost instantly, and it made for a very fun interview. We had an absolute blast chatting with them, and feeling like part of the team, if only for a few minutes.

Participating Talent:

What To Expect In Season 2

When asked what to expect in season 2 the cast all agrees — a whole lot more fun. Where Space Force season 1 spent a lot of time dealing with outside threats, season 2 takes a look at the team inside of Space Force. This means that they got to spend a lot more time together as a family and an ensemble, and learning to love each other despite their flaws. Although the cast also explains that someone, they won’t say who, just might be looking to branch out from Space Force.

Ben Schwartz discusses how he loves getting to do real scenes with more of the characters than he got to in the first season. Erin, played by Diana Silvers, is a big part and important part of Space Force season 2, so it is great to have her coming in and doing a lot with the rest of the group. Silvers says we will get to see Erin mending the relationship with her dad, played by Steve Carell, this season, which she loves. But she also really enjoys all the shenanigans.

Schwartz also says that while the majority of what we see in the season is straight from the pages of the script, they did all get to play more in terms of improv than the previous season.

“For my character, just the idea of him looking for a father figure because Jon Lovitz plays my dad in this one and he is not the great one.” – Ben Schwartz

This ensemble cast works so well together, and we can’t wait for you to see what they go through in Space Force season 2. They all have their own individual journeys as well, and one that really sticks out is Captain Angela Ali’s.

“We’re seeing a woman having a slow seven episode breakdown. But it is a comedy, so we’re seeing the lighter side of that.” – Tawny Newsome

Writing An Episode

Jimmy O. Yang writes what is one of our favorite episodes of the season, episode 3, which is about the Chinese Delegation coming to visit Space Force. It is absolutely hilarious. When asked about adding to this aspect of the show, it is clear that he is very proud of his work – as he should be.

“It was a great honor to be able to work with Greg Daniels, Steve Carell, and everyone else in the writer’s room. It was so fun focusing on the comedy and all the relationships of the different characters. So glad to be able to write an episode that I can inform. And not only that, one of the guest stars in the episode is played by my father, Richard Ouyang, who has some great scenes with John Malkovich, so it was a great family affair.” – Jimmy O. Yang

Battle Bots

Another fantastic episode in Space Force season 2 involves Battle Bots, and it looked like an absolute blast to film — so we had to ask about it! Jimmy O. Yang laughs and says that it was awesome and that they had real robots come in and cutting each other up

“It was so fun for the prop masters to source these bots. That was an idea that was pitched in the writer’s room and everybody just has such fond memories of that show — including Steve — everyone just loved battle bots.” – Jimmy O. Yang

He goes on to explain that they didn’t know what the story was going to be before they committed to bring in the bots, but of course it fit perfectly to make it an episode where Ben’s character was trying to prove himself — and the Chan and Angela relationship. He says it all worked out perfectly, and we agree. Get ready for that episode because it is so much fun!
