Everything For A Reason Movie Review

Everything For A Reason is a romantic comedy with familiar vibes, but yet makes itself unique and a complete joy to watch.

Perhaps it is the Greek in me, but I had a fantastic time watching Everything For A Reason. This romantic comedy type movie is familiar yes, however it also brings a uniqueness that makes the story its own. This is the first venture of Vlas and Charley Parlapanides, who most recently wrote and created the Netflix Anime hit Blood of Zeus

Set in Jersey and centering around a group of Greek-Americans, this movie resonated with me for several reasons. Not only because I am Greek, and grew up with a Greek family and friends who are very similar to those in the film, but also because where I grew up in Massachusetts was a lot like the Jersey area.

The movie follows an up and coming screenwriter who meets a woman who throws a wrench in his career plans, but perhaps not in a bad way. Everything For A Reason first hit the festival circuit in 2000 and there are some cringe-worthy moments in the film — especially in the beginning. That being said I encourage you to stick with it because it does stand the test of time once those moments pass. I promise you.

I am a sucker for a love story, and while this one is a bit predictable, it is still a lot of fun to watch. The romantic side of the romantic comedy is completely pulled off and yes, I did get a little teary towards the end. If you are coming for the comedy aspect don’t worry, this movie makes that work to. The perfectly placed comedy had me cracking up, and also missing my Greek family. One of the jokes, about Greek men and boys, is something I have heard my cousins say more times than I can count, and it still had me giggling.

Something that I really enjoy about this movie is the musical score. All to often I think the score of a film is overlooked. This one is a great combination of the hits of the pop hits of the time, but also authentic Greek music.

Everything For A reason has both heart and humor. While some parts might not have aged well, the movie overall holds up over time. Sure it is a little bit predictable, but most romantic comedies are. That doesn’t mean the ride isn’t enjoyable! If you missed this one when it first came out I encourage you to check it out, I sure am glad I did!
