Holidate Review: The RomCom That Knows It’s A RomCom

Holidate is hilarious, fun, a little bit predictable, and a whole lot of dirty! This movie is sure to surprise you this holiday season!

Holidate is the movie that I did not know I needed, but am so glad that I watched. I like cheesy romcoms but I was not expecting to love this one so much. The best part about Holidate? That it makes fun of itself. Yes it is predictable, but it is a whole lot of fun. Plus, it is pretty dirty and as someone with a dirty mind, I appreciated that.

One of the reasons that this movie is so funny and hits the nail on the head is that it makes fun of romcoms — even though it is one. Sloane and Jackson meet and decide to be each other’s holidates. What is a holidate? Well a date, for the holidays, with no commitment. This allows them to have plans for the holidays so they aren’t alone, but they make a pact to not even sleep together.

Sloane really wants to do this because her mother is constantly trying to set her up and Jackson? Well he is clearly just afraid of commitment. They get together and go out for every holiday — even ones like the 4th of July and Halloween.

Towards the beginning of the movie, Sloane goes on a rant about romcoms and how there is always some excuse that the stars of the movie won’t get together, but they always do. And that you can tell from the poster. I was dying laughing because that is so true! Plus, we all can assume that Sloane and Jackson are going to end up together at the end of this movie. Do they? Well, I won’t say. You will have to watch and find out!

The cast is all around amazing. I am used to American Horror Story Emma Roberts so this comedic version of her was a pleasant surprised. It really shows her versatility. And honestly I didn’t know Luke Bracey at all before this, but now I will be checking out more of his work.

Kristin Chenoworth is absolutely hilarious in Holidate. She plays Aunt Susan and is the one that gave Sloane the idea of the holidate. She is a little bit slutty, but a whole lot of fun. She provides a lot of the comedy in this movie. Actually, pretty much everyone does.

Overall Thoughts

Holidate is the romcom that I did not know I needed this year. I was reluctant to watch it, and I have no clue why. This movie is right up my alley because it is predictable, fun, and a little bit dirty — OK, a lot dirty.

This movie is very clearly for adults and older teens. There is a lot of drug reference, language, and sexual references. Which, like I said, is part of why I love it so much. I never expected to laugh as hard as I did. If you are looking for a movie to take you away from this crazy world for about two hours, Holidate is for you.

About Holidate

Sloane (Emma Roberts) and Jackson (Luke Bracey) hate the holidays. They constantly find themselves single, sitting at the kids table, or stuck with awkward dates. But when these two strangers meet one particularly bad Christmas, they make a pact to be each other’s “holidate” for every festive occasion throughout the next year.

With a mutual disdain for the holidays, and assuring themselves that they have no romantic interest in the other, they make the perfect team. However, as a year of absurd celebrations come to an end, Sloane and Jackson find that sharing everything they hate may just prove to be something they unexpectedly love.
