The Secret Garden (2020) is the re-imagining of a classic tale. It stays very true to the original and is absolutely gorgeous to watch.
When I was younger, I would read all the time. You could always find me with my nose in a book. The Secret Garden was one of my favorite stories, that I read time and time again. When the movie came out in 1993, I watched it and really enjoyed it. So when I heard there was going to be a remake, I was cautiously optimistic. And in all honesty, I think it is my favorite version of the film.
The Secret Garden is the story of a little girl named Mary whose parents died. She is shipped off to live with her Uncle on his large estate. When she arrives she is told she will likely have no one to play with or talk to and to basically just deal with it. As she explores the estate she discovers a lot of magical things, including a secret garden. She also makes two new friends and the story that unfolds is one of friendship, self worth, and magic.
This version of the film is breathtaking and wondrous. The way that the garden is portrayed had me wishing I could visit there right away! Perhaps part of that is because I have been in my house nearly every day for the last five months, but nonetheless, it was a beautiful place. They did a great job with the set.
The casting for this movie was really on point. The adults were great, but the kids really all shone through. The Secret Garden is about magic, wonder, and embracing your inner child. So I was really pleased to see the kids totally take over the movie. As it should be.
The three of them are the main characters — Mary, Colin, and Dickin. I watched this movie with my two young daughters who are 7 and 9 years old and they were immediately drawn in. While they did think Mary was a bit mean at first (she totally is), they great to love her. They enjoyed watching her make friends and be persistent – a great trait to have.
The story itself stays very true to the original book and movie, so don’t be afraid that your favorite parts will be missing. Fans of the story are sure to be more than happy, and new viewers will likely enjoy getting to know it. This movie is more than worth a watch and a great and wholesome pick for family movie night.
Interviews With Edan Hayhurst & Dixie Egerickx
The other day I sat down today to chat with the two stars of The Secret Garden — Edan Hayhurst, who plays Colin, and Dixie Egerickx, who plays Mary. My daughters joined me for the interview and were thrilled they each got to ask a question — and got some great answers! Get the inside scoop on what it was like on the set, working with the dog, and so much more right from the actors themselves!
The Secret Garden is a beautiful film to watch and holds true to the original story, while getting just a tad darker. If you know me, you know I like dark. Overall I really enjoyed this film, although it is a bit slow to start. My 7 and 9 year old however, were captivated from the beginning.
