The Sonic The Hedgehog movie was better than I ever anticipated it could be. Hilarious, heartwarming, and a perfectly chosen cast had me eager for a sequel!
I admit I had my reserves about Sonic the Hedgehog, but it completely blew my mind. I found myself laughing out loud several times, and yes, I even shed a few tears. The plot of this movie was far better than I ever anticipated and I was often on the edge of my seat and rooting for Sonic and cheering him on. Get ready to have SO MUCH FUN with this movie — and fall in love with Sonic even more.
I am a giant Sonic the Hedgehog fan — as is my family. We read the comic books, play the games, and of course watch the television show. So when we first heard about the Sonic the Hedgehog movie we were thrilled. And after the final trailer, plus knowing the cast that was chosen (James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, and JIM CARREY — come on), we were anxious to see it.
Paramount Pictures flew us out to the premiere and we watched it before many others did. To say we were all blown away is an understatement. My husband, who hates almost everything, was laughing out loud throughout the whole thing. And my daughters — they had the time of their lives!
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG IS MINDBLOWINGLY GOOD!
Hilarious
Jim Carrey gets back to himself in Sonic the Hedgehog and I was totally here for it. He had me laughing so hard I was crying on more than one occasion. It was obvious that he had a blast bringing Dr. Robotnik to the big screen — and I think I had just as much fun watching him do it. He was perfectly chosen for this role, as was everyone else involved in the film.
Ben Schwartz is such a funny guy — and he brings that to Sonic. I have met and interviewed him twice now and each time he had me in stitches. I loved hearing his voice for Sonic. It just made sense to me. As we already know from Ducktales, Ben is an amazing voice actor. When Sonic was sad, I felt sad. When Sonic was happy, I was happy. And of course, those one liners had me giggling like a school girl!
James Marsden gets some good joked in too. My personal favorite is “You might want to check your fur on that one.” You will get it when you watch the movie.
Heartwarming
James Marsden’s character and his relationship with Sonic throughout the movie is going to give you all the feels. It starts off as a cop just trying to help someone out, and becomes so much more than that. I loved following their journey, and I think you will too.
Sonic the Hedgehog is about family. And making real friends. And bonding. I have felt alone like Sonic does at the beginning of the movie — I think we all have at some point in our lives. So I really felt for him. My kids connected with him, as well, and we all fell in love with him just a little bit more.
Fans Will Love The Easter Eggs
In order to keep this review spoiler free, I have the Sonic the Hedgehog Easter Eggs in a separate article. But let me just take the time to say if you spent your afternoons collecting rings and battling Dr. Robotnik as a kid like I did, you will LOVE this movie. There was so much fan service in it — but not too much to distract from the plot.
Stay For The End Credit Scene
Don’t you just love when a movie puts a teaser during the credits. I know I sure do. But more often than not, it is something you could have waited for. Not with Sonic the Hedgehog. Oh no. This end credit scene will have you FREAKING OUT! I literally screamed and jumped up — and I was not the only one. My mind was BLOWN and it has me beyond hyped for a sequel. Any fan of the Sonic games, TV show, and/or comics will lose their minds. Trust me.
So stay. Keep your butt in that seat. I don’t want to give anything away but I promise you, it would be worth waiting an hour for (it will only be about 5 minutes though). My daughter got up to go to the bathroom — and my husband took her — and when I told them what they missed, she said she would have peed her pants waiting to see that. So, take her advice. If you have to go? Just pee your pants. It will be worth it.
Overall Thoughts
Sonic The Hedgehog is a really fun movie. It will make you laugh harder than you expect to — and it might even make you cry. The entire cast was perfectly chosen and the CGI knocked it out of the park (after a quick redesign). Fans of Sonic are sure to have the time of their lives watching this movie — I will be shocked if anyone has any valid complaints about it.
For those that don’t know much about Sonic, get ready to fall in love with a blue hedgehog. With a stellar performance by all of the cast, this is sure to be one of the best films of 2020!
