Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is violent and dark — but that is part of the reason I loved it so much, I think. This movie truly brought out a lot of emotions in me. I cheered, I gasped, and yes (shocker) I shed a few — or more — tears. You know I love writing about the 10 Most Emotional Moments in films, and this one was easy for me. The second the movie ended, I knew which moments I was going to include in this write up.
As always, these Maleficent: Mistress of Evil moments are not in the order of how emotional they were for me, but more or less the order they happen in the film. If there is something you think I left out, feel free to tell me! Just know that everyone is sensitive to different things, so we might not feel the same way about something — and that is OK!
If you haven’t seen Maleficent: Mistress of Evil yet and don’t want to be spoiled, stop reading these emotional moments now. Because they are riddled with spoilers.
WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD FOR MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL!
Prince Phillip Asks Aurora to Marry Him
I am a sucker for love — so when Prince Phillip asks Aurora to marry him, it warms my heart. This is towards the beginning of the movie, and quite frankly we all saw it coming. It has been five years after all, so it is about time if you ask me! Him blubbering over it and, quite obviously, being nervous about it, made it even sweeter. No, I didn’t cry, but it made me really happy!
Aurora Asks Maleficent To Go To The Castle
This part. Oh, this part. After Phillip and Aurora become engaged, Queen Ingrith, Phillip’s mother, invites Maleficent to the castle. Of course she does not want to go, but then Aurora tells her why she wants her there. She says the reason Maleficent was invited to the castle is “because his mother wishes to meet mine” — cue the water works, and I right?
Maleficent, who is a villain after all, has a soft spot for Aurora. And the fact that Aurora calling her mother convinced her to do something she had no intention of doing is so sweet. One of my favorite things about Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is the mother-daughter relationship between these two. Perhaps because I have two daughters of my own.
The King Is Cursed… By the Queen
The emotion that came out in me during this scene was basically pure anger. This might not be the emotion you thought of when I said I was going to tell you my most emotional moments of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, but anger is an emotion — and a powerful one. King John was so nice and caring, and OPEN to his son’s relationship with Aurora.
But not the Queen, oh no. She had other plans. And she was willing to do whatever it took to accomplish them — including putting a curse on her husband. This was so she could put the blame on Maleficent, and also because he did not agree with her opinion of her.
Aurora Chooses The Queen Over Maleficent
When Aurora decides to stay at the caste with Phillip and the Queen, instead of going home with Maleficent — my heart broke. Poor Maleficent. Betrayed again. No wonder she is an evil villain — she was pushed to be this way. I truly felt for her. Having two daughters of my own, I am sure the time will come when they will choose someone else over me. But I think one of the hardest parts about this scene is the fact that Aurora just assumed Maleficent put the curse on the King, meaning she didn’t trust her.
Maleficent Finds Her People
All that being said, my heart did warm for Maleficent when she discovered the rest of her race was still alive. I was excited to learn all about their past — but that came with learning just how close they are to extinction. So for me, this part was a bag of mixed emotions. I was happy for Maleficent to learn she is not alone, but really sad to hear that her race was in such grave peril.
Flittle (The Blue Fairy) Sacrifices Herself
This whole scene was horrible and heart wrenching. It felt like the magical creatures were being toyed with. I mean, I suppose they were – with the playing of the organ initiating the poison that would take away their magic, and essentially kill them. It was a pretty dark and intense way for them to be murdered. Locked in the church and attacked like that.
And then Flittle, AKA the Blue Fairy, flies herself in to the organ pipe to stop it from spraying anymore of her friends and fellow creatures. I was shocked when she turned into a bouquet of flowers. It not only saddened me, but I immediately thought of how my youngest daughter would react. She is extremely sensitive, and I know that this part will make her cry.
Diaval Turns Into A Bear
This is so silly, but is something that put a HUGE smile on my face when it happened — and I am pretty sure I whispered “awwwww” in the theater. Diaval is a shape-shifter — well, Maleficent turns him in to animals with her magic. When walking in the castle toward the beginning of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, he sees a painting of a bear, and mentions that he could be a bear.
Well during the insane and epic battle between humans and the creatures of the Moors, Maleficent reappears and does just that — turns Diaval into a bear. He is then able to help free the creatures from the church. It was such an emotional moment — it made me beam from ear to ear!
Maleficent Dies To Save Aurora
For some reason I had a feeling this was going to happen in Mistress of Evil. I don’t know how I saw it coming, but I did. When Maleficent dies in order to protect Aurora from Queen Ingrith, someone in the theater screamed. I gasped. It was — well it was a hard moment to watch. But seeing just how much she really does love Aurora, that she was willing to lay down her life for her… well, that was pretty amazing.
A Phoenix Rises
As the dust that Maleficent turned into starts to swirl, I knew what was coming — and I was SO EXCITED to see it happen. Villains are hard to kill — and Maleficent is one powerful villain. She comes back as a Phoenix, and helps win the war for the creatures of the Moors. Helps to stop them fighting with the humans. And then she becomes herself again. Right in front of Aurora.
For me, this might just be the most emotional moment of these 10 Maleficent: Mistress of Evil emotional moments. Especially when Aurora looks at Maleficent and says “Well, Well.” with a smile. Awww, here I go, tearing up again.
Prince Phillip & Aurora’s Wedding
Who doesn’t love a good wedding? I know I sure do! Although I admit, it was kind of strange that they decided to get married right there — in the middle of the remains of a war. I mean, there were casualties so… did they cart the bodies off first or…?? However, it was a pretty wedding and there were a few moments that really touched me.
Maleficent sees Diaval tearing up and tells him to hold it together. And then she wipes a tear from her own eye. As I mentioned I have two daughters and of course my head went to how I will feel when I see them getting married. And then, as Aurora walks down the aisle, Knotgrass and Thistlewit are changing the color of her dress – because of course they are. Then it turns blue — and you see the vase of blue flowers there at the wedding. They say it is perfect. This part was sweet and also a fun nod to the classic Sleeping Beauty movie.
There you have it — my 10 most emotional moments of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Which ones do you agree with? Would you change any?
