I have told you before I am sure, but Carol Danvers has been one of my favorite Marvel ladies for a long time. Back when she was Ms. Marvel, she was amazing, and I was hooked on her story lines. And then she became Captain Marvel, which was insanely cool. She is a total badass. Super strong. She can take down Iron Man guys. And HARD! With the Captain Marvel movie hitting theaters this March, all fans should be familiar with some story lines. Here are the five comic books that I recommend reading before you go see Captain Marvel.
From what we have seen in the trailers, it seems we are going to get quite a bit of the Kree/Skrull War in Captain Marvel. The Skrulls are one of my favorite alien races in the Marvel Comics Universe, so I am beyond thrilled about this. You really should understand their background with the Kree (who are a major part of Carol’s backstory), and this is the best book to do it.
A conflict of star-spanning proportions – with Earth caught in the crossfire! For those eternal intergalactic enemies, the merciless Kree and the shape-changing Skrulls, have gone to war, and our planet is situated on the front lines! Can Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the Avengers, bring about an end to the fighting before humanity becomes a casualty of war? And what good are even a dozen super-powered champions against the vast military machines of two of the great empires of the cosmos? The key to victory lies with the expatriate Kree Captain Mar-Vell and his human host, honorary Avenger Rick Jones! Featuring the trend-setting artwork of Neal Adams, the Kree/Skrull War is universally acknowledged as one of the finest and most important sagas in the Marvel canon.
Generations: Captain Marvel & Captain Mar-Vell
This is a quick and easy read that is beyond worth it! You get to know a little bit more about Mar-Vell and Carol. There are several Generations stories that involve other heroes as well, but this is one of the better ones if you ask me.
Carol Danvers, THE MIGHTY CAPTAIN MARVEL, finds herself face-to-face with someone she never thought she’d see again — Mar-Vell of the Kree, THE MIGHTY CAPTAIN MARVEL! But before she can get to the bottom of this impossible reunion, she gets embroiled in combat with someone who wants the Kree destroyed — talk about terrible timing!
Civil War II
Want to know what makes Captain Marvel tick? See why she goes toe to toe with Iron Man in Civil War II. Easily one of my favorite crossover events ever from Marvel (right up there with Secret Invasion and Dark Reign and if you know me – that says a lot)! It is one of the storylines that really shows just how powerful she is. And what drives her. What a lot of core values are. I am kind of on Iron Man’s side in this one, but I still adore Carol in it. I made a video explanation of the story a while ago, so feel free to just watch that.
When a new Inhuman named Ulysses emerges with uncanny precognitive powers, Earth’s protectors must wrestle with the dramatic consequences. And when one of Ulysses’ visions leads to tragedy, an old friendship reaches a breaking point over a devastating loss as longtime teammates Captain Marvel and Iron Man find themselves at odds. What does it mean to be a hero? Is it right to act now on crimes yet to be committed? Do the ends justify the means? And how reliable is Ulysses’ gift? As Avengers, X-Men, Inhumans, Spider-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy and more stand divided between the two figureheads, the battle lines are drawn. And when one of the greatest among them falls, the Marvel Universe is once again set on a path to war – but will the fight for the future leave one worth saving?
The Life of Captain Marvel
This mini series has been PHENOMENAL! I have been reading it issue by issue, but the paperback collection will be out in February. I highly recommend it to anyone who is even the slightest fan of Carol Danvers. You learn a lot about her background, and her family, and what makes her, her. And they drop a few major bombs that if I see in the movie I will freak out about.
Warning: Major spoilers in the below video with Crazy Amanda Reacts.
She’s one of the mightiest heroes not just on Earth, but in the entire galaxy! Now learn exactly how Carol Danvers became the woman she is – the Avenger she is – in the definitive origin of Captain Marvel! When sudden, crippling anxiety attacks sideline Carol in the middle of a fight, she finds herself reliving memories of a life she thought was far behind her. You can’t outrun where you’re from – and sometimes, you have to go home again. But while the Captain takes a temporary leave from duty to unravel her past, trouble comes looking for her. A weapon has been unleashed. And Carol’s sleepy coastal town is about to become the center of its world. But there are skeletons in Captain Marvel’s closet – and what she discovers will change her entire life!
Marvel’s Captain Marvel Prelude
One of my favorite things about the MCU, is that they often leak over in to the comic book universe and vice-versa. Marvel always puts out a prelude book (or two) before a film is released and it is no different with Captain Marvel. Not going to lie, I got chills and teared up when I got to the last page of this book.
Before CAROL DANVERS takes flight in 2019’s first Marvel Studios film, immerse yourself in this all-new adventure! Spinning out of the mysterious events of Avengers: Infinity War, NICK FURY and MARIA HILL set off on life-or-death missions that lead directly to the appearance of CAPTAIN MARVEL!
About Captain Marvel
Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ CAPTAIN MARVEL is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes.
