Every weekend, my family has a family movie night. We take turns picking a movie and cuddle up on the couch with some snacks. It is one of my favorite times of the week. I know that eventually my daughters will want nothing to do with my husband and I on a weekend night – or any night for that matter – and so I savor it. One movie we watched recently was Napping Princess. I was excited to get an advance copy, and so were my girls. We love Anime in our house, so we were eager to watch it. To be honest, I was a little worried it might be a bit adult for them, but they really enjoyed it.

About Napping Princess

From visionary director Kenji Kamiyama comes a sci-fi fantasy that effortlessly weaves together the rapidly evolving technology of today’s world with the fantastic imagination of the next generation. It was even nominated for Best Animated Feature – Independent, at this year’s Annie Awards.

The year is 2020, three days before the opening of the Tokyo Olympics. While she should be studying for her exams, Kokone Morikawa often dozes off, entering a dream-world called Heartland full of fantastic motorized contraptions. But when her father, a talented but mysterious mechanic, is kidnapped for stealing technology from a powerful corporation, it’s up to Kokone and her childhood friend Morio to save him. Together they realize that Kokone’s dream-world holds the answers to the mystery behind the stolen tech, uncovering a trail of clues to her father’s disappearance and ultimately a surprising revelation about Kokone’s family.

With an ambitious mix of multilayered action, whimsical characters and inventive machines, Napping Princess is a genre- and universe-blending film that shows that following your dreams is sometimes the best way to discover your past.

  1. I see my great grandchildren watching and playing with some of the animes, but I do not know much about them or which ones they like the best.
  2. I am not a huge anime fan - in fact I had never heard of it until my fiance and I got together a few years ago. I have seen a few that I was ok with but I dont have a specific fave. I can watch them so long as they are more story based than action based - this one seems to fill that order for me. I cannot stand the anime's that are all robots and duels... it just doesn't appeal to me. Can't wait to share this one with my hubbs - I'm sure I will get extra brownie points.
  3. My all-time favorite anime would have to be Haibane Renmei. It's beautifully animated with a wonderful cast of characters. It starts off a little slow while we get to know the characters, but by the sixth episode the show takes a dramatic turn and by the end of the series I was moved to tears. Highly recommended. Thank you for the chance to win.

  5. I love a lot of different anime depending on my mood! Cowboy Bebop will always be one of my all-time favorites though. And I love that my 7 year old daughter is starting to love Sailor Moon. I do tend to watch more action/SF stuff that is pretty adult, so haven't gotten to share it with her. But she has enjoyed the aforementioned Sailor Moon (had her first comic con this past weekend and she cosplayed as Sailor Moon!) and My Neighbor Totoro. I'd like to show her Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away sometime soon.
