I grew up watching Reading Rainbow. Just ask my mom, whenever you saw me, I most likely had a book in my hand. I think my love of reading is what really sparked my love for this series. I thought it was really cool to see my favorite books come to life – and my inner nerd loves LaVar Burton of course (even though I would pick Star Wars over Star Trek any day!). I recently received a Reading Ranbow DVD (If You Give A Mouse A Cookie) and was thrilled to share it with my girls. They loved it! So much so that when they saw Animal Cafe arrive, they asked if we could watch it. Lucky for them we were on our way to a mini-vacation about an hour and a half away so they got to watch it on the ride in the car. We even watched it again on the way back!
The four episodes and books featured in this DVD are “Animal Cafe,” read by Martin Short, “The Tortoise and the Hare,” read by Gilda Radner, “Ludlow Laughs,” read by Phyllis Diller, and “Giving Thanks: A Native American Good Morning Message,” read by Nicholson Earl Billey. Airing on PBS from 1983-2009, and hosted by LeVar Burton (“Roots,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation”) for its entire 26-year run, the program garnered more than 200 awards, including 26 Emmys and a Peabody Award. To learning about comedy in one episode, to profiling people who have occupations in the evening and early morning in another, LeVar takes children on fun-filled learning adventures they won’t forget.
“Animal Café” is available at Target and other retailers. The DVD run time is approximately 120 minutes and its SRP is $6.99. This DVD is available from PBS Distribution.
