American Housewife Star Katy Mixon Says She Rocks & Rolls in a Different Way

The show American Housewife is basically about my life. If you have not seen this ABC Show yet, then I highly recommend checking it out. I guarantee that you will laugh your butt off! It is my favorite new sitcom, and I don’t say things like that lightly. While in LA recently, I was lucky enough to get a sneak peak at this week’s episode as well as sit down with the star of the show, Katie Otto herself, Katy Mixon! When I tell you that she is the nicest, sweetest, most down to Earth person you will ever meet, that is an understatement. She is AMAZING!

On the Creator, Sarah Dunn

When asked how she is so spot on with how suburbs like Westport are, Katy replied that she didn’t know. She said that the writing is so spot on and easy to work with.

It comes from the creator, Sarah Dunn. This was her vision. Most of the situations come from her life and what she has experienced, living in Upstate New York. Kenny Schwartz, who is the show runner, he’s from Westport, CT so they are really taking from her. It’s been my job to recreate that. I couldn’t be more opposite of Sarah Dunn. I am from the south. I play older in the show.

Talking with Katy Mixon

Katy Mixon is the Opposite of Katy Otto

If you have seen American Housewife, then you know a lot of the episodes have to do with overcoming fear and anxiety. We asked Katy if she had any tips for people who struggle with this.

I rock and roll in a different way. I always have. I’ve always been quite fearless and have never really let anxiety take a toll on me. I march to the beat of my own drum. I get back up on that horse. If I don’t get it right, I’m gonna do it again the next day. That’s kinda my MO. That’s how I have always rocked and rolled. Sarah Dunn is quite different from me, which is a beautiful thing too. I’m not like her, I’m not like Katy Otto. I don’t get mad at a green juice. If your gonna do yoga, I think that’s awesome. You’re bettering yourself. I love people. I love celebrating people and what makes them happen. I’m just so opposite of what Katy Otto is, which is fun to play.

Katie’s Favorite Episode to Film

There are so many great episodes of American Housewife. I am not sure that I could ever pick a favorite, but we asked Katy to. “Oh hunny, there’s so many. We just finished filming three weeks ago, so it feels all a blur to be honest with you. I love Bag Lady, I love that one, when she just went crazy. That was real fun. I love being able to do physical comedy. I loved Zombie Run. We did that one right away and it was crazy, I must have run 5 miles in a period of 5 days. Those are some of the ones that stick out.

Impacting Moms

In American Housewife, there are many ways that Katie Otto inspires me. She is very strong willed and doesn’t let anyone bring her down for long. We asked Katy how it feels to know that she is impacting moms. When she answered, I teared up, because she teared up too. I cannot stress enough how much of a sweetheart Katy is; she’s a real southern belle.

It brings tears to my eyes. I could not be more grateful. I am having the time of my life. It’s so special to be given the opportunity to do what you love to do. And then to have people be able to receive it or relate to it. That’s just the best thing in the world. I am in a new dimension. I have never played a mom. That’s been quite special to be able to do that on camera and evoke emotion. I knew it in the beginning when I signed on to [American Housewife] – I felt like it didn’t matter what gender you are or what background you come from, everybody relates to insecurity.

Becoming a Mom

Now that she is going to be a mom herself, we had to ask if there is anything that she would like to take from Katie Otto to apply to herself as a mother. Katy’s response had us all chuckling (and relating!).

I don’t really know. She’s really strong. I’m really strong. I just rock and roll in a different way. I love her so much, that Katie Otto, but I don’t know what character trait I would take from her. She’s quite fearless, but I’m quite fearless too. She says what her mind thinks and there is power in telling it like it is. I’m gonna just be me. I come from a family of 9. I’m the third oldest. I want [my son] to do whatever he wants to do. I am gonna be such a big fan of it. I just want to introduce him to the world. Whether its a mathematician or a rock band. My fiance and I just want to encourage him to be who he is meant to be.”

Someone then asked if her on set family was excited and supportive for her. “What the on set family situation is, I could not be more grateful. They’re incredible. They’re so so special. Like that sweet Diedrich who is my TV husband, Greg. I’ve just been really blessed.

AMERICAN HOUSEWIFE – ABC’s “American Housewife” stars Daniel DiMaggio as Oliver, Meg Donnelly as Taylor, Katy Mixon as Meg Donnelly, Diedrich Bader as Greg and Julia Butters as Anna-Kat. (ABC/Craig Sjodin)

About American Housewife

The wealthy town of Westport, Conn., is full of cookie-cutter mommies and their seemingly perfect offspring, but the members of the Otto family can’t be counted among them. Confident housewife Katie Otto shares a home with her husband, Jeff, and their three children Taylor, Harrison and Anna-Kat, and while she loves them all dearly, she recognizes they probably aren’t going to land themselves in a magazine spread anytime soon. The matriarch knows her family is beautifully flawed, and she’s far from sorry.

This Week’s Episode

“The Club” – When Anna-Kat develops a fear of water and stops bathing, her therapist suggests the Ottos get her to go swimming. But can Katie get over own her fear of wearing a bathing suit in public at the Westport Country Club so she can help her kid out? Meanwhile Oliver gives his dad a style makeover after students at the college give Greg a low “jalapeño” score, on “American Housewife,” airing TUESDAY, MAY 2 (8:30-9:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network.

We screened this episode and I must say it is one of my favorites to date. I can totally relate about not wanting to be seen in a bathing suit. I think Katie Otto just may have inspired me to strut my stuff this summer though!
