Moana Bluray

When I was vacationing with my family in Disney World last November, we were lucky enough to see Moana a few days before it came out. We actually watched it on the beach at the Polynesian Resort – and despite being an uncharacteristically cold night in Florida, it is a great family memory of ours. We all loved the movie so much that my husband came home and immediately got HeiHei and Pua tattoos! We are also planning to get matching Mini Maui tattoos soon. So of course we were thrilled to hear that Moana was finally coming out on Blu-ray and DVD! It is available NOW on Disney Movies Anywhere and Digital HD/3D. We actually rented it from a hotel when we were on vacation a couple weeks ago – and then watched in the theater on board our recent Disney Cruise twice! Moana is coming home on Blu-ray and DVD on March 7 and it is jam packed with amazing bonus features that we weren’t able to see those times!

Moana means a lot to our family – it is actually all about family and ancestors. It is about tradition and love – and it is about the ocean. This movie means a lot to my husband since he is a Navy guy. It has a very powerful message and it makes him appreciate his time in the United States Navy (and maybe miss them a little bit). Sailors often get pig and chicken tattoos on their legs or feet because it was a good luck tradition. The old tales go that whenever there was a shipwreck, the pigs and chickens would always find their way to dry land. I don’t know for sure that this is why Hei Hei and Pua are who they are, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

When we returned from our Disney Cruise (lots more information on that coming soon!) we had an amazing package waiting for us from Disney. Not only did we receive a digital copy of Moana (and a Google Chromecast to watch it on), it included a Singing Moana Necklace, Maui Hook, Moana Beach Towel, my new favorite coffee mug, and more! I knew this was the perfect way to continue our Disney vacation for one more day of magic before we went back to the real world. I printed out a bunch of Moana Activity Sheets and Coloring Pages, made my grandmother’s famous tuna fish sandwiches (the secret is celery and pepper!), set up our Google Chromecast (which took just a few minutes), and we settled in to watch Moana.

It was our sixth time seeing it and we loved it just as much as the first time, if not more. We were excited to be able to watch all the bonus footage, which was all amazing. I am honestly not sure I could choose a favorite – maybe the Maui Mini-Movie! With Google Chromecast and the Disney Movies Anywhere App, watching your favorite Disney movie is as easy as the click of a button (or two).

According to directors Ron Clements and John Musker, the story of “Moana” was inspired by the great explorers who masterfully navigated the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. “Voyaging is a real source of pride for many Pacific Islanders, a part of their identity,” says Clements. Many experts believe that about 3,000 years ago, those deep-sea exploratory voyages halted for about a millennium before resuming. This rebirth of exploration sparked the filmmakers’ imaginations, and the heroine at the heart of the story. “The idea of a teenage girl who dreamed of becoming a navigator—considering the abilities of her ancestors—was so appealing,” explains Musker. Moana’s quest to become a wayfinder also serves as a journey of self-discovery, empowering her to find her own identity – a beautiful and powerful message for audiences of all ages and genders.

No family traditions that were passed down but there are a couple that I notice my daughter repeats from her youth.

One of my favorite family traditions we had growing up was to take a road trip to a mountain cabin at the end of summer. My mom, my aunt, my grandmother, my brother and all of our cousins piled into a van and headed west. It was always the best fun!
